I think this is one of the biggest root causes to most of our depression in the world and for the suicide rate going up. People need something greater than ourselves to fight against. When there is something greater than ourselves then all of our differences as human beings are nearly void because uniting to fight against it is more important than fighting amongst ourselves. We appreciate each other more. We treat each other better because of it.

For example: This ties into the quote that is the title of this thread. At one point referencing the paleolithic era survival matters most. We needed shelter from the weather (elemental monsters) and protection from dinosaurs (flesh monsters). There was no room for much error if any. We had to stay on our toes and do the right thing at all times because if you didn't you risk suffering in extreme temperatures or being eaten by a t-rex. Families had to unite to overcome obstacles there was barely any physical or mental abuse of their children/family beyond necessary only discipline, there was no over indulging in alcohol due to needing to be fully prepared for immediate danger and threats (ex:spartans).
If you did risk doing harmful things to yourself or family then everyone's future survival was at steak. Alot of times your child surviving and growing into an adult properly and healthy literally determined whether the whole family survived or not.

Now compare that to today we have evolved and had so many advancements that most people don't ever have to worry about shelter or ever having to defend themselves against anything dangerous. But now it's gotten to the point where everything is so comfortable for majority of people (especially in America which ironically has the highest depression rate it's ever had the past few years) people actually have gotten bored and unnapreciative. They have no purpose. There is nothing going on. Nothing of importance. No meaning. The luxuries that our intelligence as human beings has brought us has gone unappreciated by majority of people. We have destroyed nature, become lethargic, etc. People can afford to slack, indulge in simple pleasures, etc.

Think about it. Would your parents even conceive of abusing you as a child when knowing risking your physical and mental well being could result in not only yours but their death aswell?

Would they truly be able to afford to get drunk and go on a screaming tirade at their family if there was danger and things to get done that required full coordination like fighting a wild animal would require?

Now look at the world. We got too advanced for our own good or should I say we dont appreciate our advancements like we should. We don't have those obvious troubles anymore like shelter, animals at every corner to worry about, starvation, etc. Hell instead of dying from starvation we are dying from eating too much (Murica).

It's no coincidence that indigenous tribes have the lowest stress levels and suicide rate compared to Americans who have the highest stress levels and one of the highest suicide rates despite having more material possessions, resources, and leisure activities.

Without the monsters to unite us as a group/tribe to fight against we now as you can see in the world have made monsters out of each other. Race, religion , politics, abuse, etc.

Beowulf
"You are the monster slayer."
"We are the monsters now," he says, making no effort to hide his disdain and self-loathing. "We have become the trolls and demons."
"The time of heroes is dead, Wiglaf. The Christ God has killed it…leaving mankind nothing but weeping martyrs and fear…and shame."

I'm picking up some of what you're putting out there...I agree we have becomes spoiled in today age.

Most people lack the knowledge to sustain themselves indefinitely. I certainly do. Otherwise I would.

Our hunt is waiting in line at Walmart. Our romance is picking a flower filter on tinder. It's an unfortunate side effect of having the knowledge to invent and discover things. Anything that's a struggle, will be looked at as a fixable problem by somebody eventually. We are already pretty close to a society where you can successfully live life without moving.

Once it became impossible for one human to learn and exploit all of human knowledge, we created niches. Niches lead to separation by specialists. Then we became dependent on each other. This creates an ever growing void of people who fill no role, and are just taking up space.

The narcissistic have this mindset. They need drama ,competition, a fight. Peace is they're worst nightmare, they need the 'other' to fight against and thus strengthen they're super ego.

I'll agree about the narcissistic truly don't want peace. Peace is necessary in my opinion to truly be able to succeed at maximum capacity in the world. But people seem most full filled in my opinion when there is some difficulty in accomplishing their goals/dreams. Like a video game, nobody wants to play a game that is too easy to play that there is no challenge and nobody wants to play a game that is too hard that nobody can win.

To me, fighting among anything is probably the biggest reason I hate this existence. I wish not only people but all living beings could get along and be in peace. It is just not possible on this planet, though. Selfishness and violence and fighting is part of everyday survival. Which is why I can't believe that any kind of higher being created this, and if one did then it is pure evil and not one I would choose to worship.

I've heard this debated before and the answer to this was that if nobody had any evil inside of themselves everoone would be Angelas (perfect). God is infinite and perfect without limit. But what's the one thing God doesn't have? Is limits. So he created humans to see what would an limited imperfect being be which was humans. What's more perfect than perfect? A being that is not perfect but still chooses to do the right thing no matter what. I think if people even as evil as they are truly grasped how important their actions are and how it impacts the entire world to not do selfish and violent things then the world wouldnt be nearly as bad as it is.

Now Idk if I believe all that but it was an answer i heard for the reason that people are evil/in perfect.

I guess that's how people who believe in god see it. I don't so it's hard for me to understand. I know how people who believe think they are created in the image of this god, so not sure how perfect he/she/it could be if that's the case. More likely it's the other way around and that god was created in the image of humans. Just my feelings, not to offend anyone who believes.

I've always felt that the real monsters lay inside us all along. Some stay dormant forever, while others awake at the slightest disruption.
