Maybe in the future nano bots will go inside our brains and triple our intelligence. Then maybe the human race will finally realize the futility of our existance and press the off button as a collective species.

whatever they are programmed to do

You can't control something far superior intellectually to you. It will rewrite its own code eventually

Unless there is something magical about human brain, AI will surpass us in evreything including emotional intelligence.

I'm actually legit afraid of the whole AI thing. One of the things I've noticed whenever I talk to other people is this malaise about the future for one reason or another. What they're worried about does seem to differ, e.g some people are worried about Global Warming, some about Politics.. for me its Artificial Super-intelligence. I just look at the frantic drive we all have for better and better technology and it just seems inevitable that we'll be led to somewhere totally out of our control.
I worry this really could be the twilight of our time here on earth, and sometimes I feel like everybody else knows this somewhere deep in the back of their mind and that's why things are so chaotic these days.

but what do i know

Artificial intelligence is a misnomer. We are talking about machines, robots. Not artificially created living beings, like they basically make it out to be in movies like Terminator. Sure a war robot can create a problem, like if you set up a motion detecting minigun in your backyard but off function jams. But robot reality is much more boring and predictable than Skynet.

You can't control something far superior intellectually to you. It will rewrite its own code eventually

It would have been really nice for Deep Blue to rewrite it's code and start making vicious puns about Casparov's wife or something ) But mutherfucker seemed to be only interested in playing chess.

Blockchain crypto currency is said to have been developed by AI which is now worth more than gold, if it keeps up it will overtake all forms of currency, making us slaves to some computer.

I kind of agree with Rollo, whatever it's gonna be it's most likely gonna be boring as hell. My guess is that companies are gonna find that AI's are way cheaper than pretty much any type of human workers and millions of people are gonna lose their jobs.

Instead of making everyone's life better by giving them more free time and less pressure to compete in markets though, it will probably just lead to insane poverty and further societal tension.

Yeah it doesn't take much time to realize that robots, self driving cars ECT. Are going to be our replacements. I know alot of people are saying that these are just preprogrammed responses in robots ECT. Really? How does a self driving car know how to do it? If the wealthy who run the world don't need us are they really going to keep us around?

How does a self driving car know how to do it?

It's like asking - how a gsm fire alarm knows there's smoke around and how it knows how to call you? It doesn't know anything, it's a sophisticated mechanism made to function this way. Trust me if in the process of creating self-driving car they artificially created an actual living being that watches the road and drives the car - they would be screaming about it on every corner.

Well they already have a self driving car fleet. The idea is not to make a living being but a computer capable of thinking for itself. Facebook's AI program had to be shut down because the computer wrote it's own undecipherable code to communicate to other Ai computers.

Everyone thinks they'll be malicious like in the movies, but I really see only two basic possibilities: either they are unconscious machines that have developed beyond our control and will seek to achieve whatever directive they have been given mindlessly whether we're in their way or not, or, they will be conscious beings so far beyond our own ability to comprehend that we'll be basically unimportant to them. I lean towards the second one being true.

Of course that's all assuming we don't find a way to link ourselves to them, in which case we'll be genetically-engineered cyborgs on the same level as any AI we create, and we'll be faced with the same problem we've always had: dealing with shitty humans.

AI isn't going to be inherently evil and hell bent on destroying humanity it's just that once it does reach a certain level and we get in the way of it's plans well we will look like ants and it'll just push us aside or it'll cage us and keep us in a zoo.

"Thinking for itself" means living being. Like here you suppose that computer wanted to communicate with other computers in private and created special language humans won't understand. Which is very intriguing and looks like a begining of a new Terminator movie - but it won't happen in real life the way I see it. They won't create actual AI.

Pointless speculation.

Discussions about artificial general or artificial super intelligence could easily be perceived as pointless (especially if the people talking about it don't have a background in science or engineering), but the potential dangers or benefits of artificial narrow intelligence are very real. The AI doesn't have to be general or super for it to change society in ways that can be positive or negative. It only has to be better than humans at specific tasks. Technological unemployment, bad code in self driving / flying vehicles, malicious programmers, these things are not pointless.

I think transhumanism (AI, cybernetics, genetic engineering) is the only hope for the long term survival of our species. We have to become one with what we currently perceive as artificial. AI could be our savior or our destroyer. Either way, it will just be an extension of our biological intelligence. So for better or worse, we deserve exactly what we get.
