Stipe has such a poet's way of writing lyrics. Plenty of imagery and a wide vocabulary. I love him but I think he takes himself too seriously sometimes, to be honest.

But this line, in the pop song (relative to most of the more somber masterpiece of an album), where he was struggling to put words to this track, he chooses the very plain, informal line that "nothing is cool." To me, I feel like the word itself conveys the sense of giving up perfectly because it's as if he had run out of fancy ways to say it. Complete mental exhaustion. If there's nothing more, nothing deeper, no conspiracy, no mystery. . . if it's really just "magic" or heavenly forces or the way the world works . . . then we're just in a matrix with no autonomy. If that's the case . . . nothing is cool.
