I unfortunately made the mistake of confiding in a few people around me (my parents, and a few others), and am now being sent to a lessened form of the psych ward (a home of sorts) for at least a day, possibly more. Can anyone provide me with a few things/types of things to say if I want to leave early or not have my time extended? If I say certain things, they'll deem me as too dangerous to myself and I will have to stay for longer. I just want to be cleared as quickly as possible.

THIS IS VERY TIME SENSITIVE AS I AM LEAVING IN ABOUT 5-6 HOURS!!!

I have never been admitted to a ward or home before but for the sake of time I'll respond.

I believe it's best to just be on your best behavior. Don't act like.. happy per se but maybe over the course of the day start acting more calm. Participate in whatever they have you do. Tell them you were just having a panic attack.

Behave calmly and in a composed manner. Cooperate and engage in "treatment". Downplay or outright deny any active suicidal ideation.

The 1st time that I got sent to a psych ward in the hospital, I made the mistake of saying no. BANG! It was around 2 days later, and I got served court papers in the hospital about going to court about a long-term commitment.

I learned then and there to say yes, smile and be a good little patient. They, at least the wards that I have been in, do NOT like folks who upset the apple cart. They want yes and smiles and behave to the max.

After my court appearance that time, I did a 180-degree switch and stayed quiet and did whatever and a little over 2 weeks later I was out. Another poor soul had been in there for months and she always fought with them on, it seemed like everything, and I always wondered if and when she was released.

My 2 cents worth, stay quiet, get along with all the other patients, and go with the flow. Also, that you have no suicidal ideations. Arguing might only get one a heck of a lot longer stay there.

Lots of hugs, love and you will do great!

Walter

when i was admitted, i quickly turned my (approx.) 1 month stay into a 5 day one by playing very nicely.
staying out of your room unless absolutely necessary, participating in any and all activities, and lying through your teeth is the easiest and most effective way of getting out early

This is why I never tell people people about being suicidal or my depression.

I stayed in one for a week and left AMA(against medical advice)

Just don't say anything except, "I'm not suicidal, I am feeling better"

I spent a fucking week in one of those places. Terrible food, they check on you every 10 minutes. The shower was STONE COLD. At least you can sleep most of the time you are there.

Thanks. I'll probably try to make it so that it doesn't seem like I'm great straight away, but that it gets better over the course of the day like you said.

Yeah, sounds good. Thanks for the advice. I'll put it to good use.

I've definitely learned my lesson lmao.... Life has been way worse since I've told people. I'm just gonna act all fine and dandy from now on. I doubt I'll ever say anything about it again.

I feel bad for you.... But yeah, at least I can sleep most of the time there. I'll shower beforehand LMAO (also thank you for the advice)

I'm so sorry you have to go through this OP. I hate psych wards so god damn much. As everyone else said just play it cool for a little bit while you're there and they should let you go in a week or a few days. I'm just sorry you have to be in one of those. None of that stuff ever fucking helps

THANK YOU. FINALLY. No one (around me, not on SS) seems to understand just how much it's NOT going to help. I don't really understand why people won't listen to the person who is actually going to experience it. People fucking suck. I appreciate the sympathy, though, it helps.

Be polite, smile, participate in whatever they ask you to do, make sure to eat when they offer you food, open the blinds/turn on lights so they don't ever see you just sitting in the dark, take care of your hygiene, don't let them see you cry, say you don't feel suicidal and are sorry you worried people, you understand that suicide would be a big mistake and would never hurt yourself.

Don't say that you have suicidal thoughts, don't overexaggerate though when saying that you're feeling better otherwise it may be not believable

because that would require them admitting our systems suck I guess… When I was admitted I wasn't even given my room and I had to undress in front of 6 staff members. You're most likely not going to have to go through that I hope because it was torturous for me

geez, that sucks. I'm sorry. But yeah, our system really is fucked. People just don't really want to admit it, since that means having to do work to fix it, and it also means they won't feel as comforted by the fact that "there's a system out there to help people with issues." but again, sorry about that, I hope you never have to go through that again.

I've been admitted twice, usually your best bet like others said is being on your absolute best behavior. If asked about suicidal thoughts tendencies or otherwise, say that you've been actively working at your mental health and list some coping skills (whether or not you use them.)

If it seems as though it was involuntary and you're not harmful to yourself or others, they'll want you out to open up a bed for new inpatients.

Participate in crafts, scheduled therapy, keep clean, act like a grade A student and they'll pardon you in a week at the longest. Best of luck to you, and stay safe.

I typed up a really long post that basically was already said in here before noticing this similar post so I'm going to copy and paste it here anyways:

If you ever end up in the psych ward and they make you feel safe and tell you that you can be honest with them, DONT BELIEVE THEM.

You can tell them you're depressed or what's going on but do not get so comfortable with them you tell them you want to ctb even a little.

If you cut just tell them the endorphins help you not feel depressed but you don't want to ctb. It just helps you cope but it makes you feel ashamed.

The next day you slowly perk up over time with a fake smile every now and then. Next you start participating in ANY and EVERY group you can go to. You show up early with a smile.

Stay out of your room until lights out.

When they ask you what changed with your attitude, you tell them you woke up on the right side of the bed and your perspective has changed. That you were just looking at life the wrong way. Or that sharing in group was really relieving and expressive for you and maybe you've been going about it the wrong way.

You never ask the doctor when you can leave.

You gladly and willingly take whatever meds they give you, "well you're the dr I just want to be healthy"

You act happy while dying on inside.

The longer you don't conform to their delusions, and admit your reality is wrong, the longer you will be there. The world is fucking sick.

Never have I wanted to ctb more than being in those places and never has it made me trust people less and feel more alone.

Psychologists will call you mentally ill, give you pills to "fix" you, and blame you for the failings of our society. A ton of people here believe they are mentally ill and they're not but they believe it because someone "trustworthy" who "knows what they're talking about" said it.

If you suffer from severe depression that doesn't mean you are mentally ill. It could 100% be environmental or societal but they will blame you and your "mental illness" EVERY TIME.
Make you believe something is wrong with you, gaslight you, and treat you like a child.

So just fake it til you make it, the system isn't designed to help you, it's designed to milk you.

If you hear voices and shit that the rest of us don't please disregard this post.
