• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

It's true that there are lots of problems that are solvable, but there are also f*cktons of problems that aren't. Poverty, in most cases, is permanent It trully is a helpless situation. You need help from outside and for most people it's not available. Not all problems are poverty, but the middle class is disappearing around the world and more and more people fall into poverty for reasons outside of their control. There's this youtuber, Dr K "Heealthy Gamer" who tells people to believe in themselves and that their helplessness is learned and a result of mental illness. I'm sick of it. Sometimes there's nothing you can do to help yourself.

I think the term has negative connotations and that it should be avoided.

This is assuming the goal is to actually help people and not just belittle them or reinforce their insecurities.

It is victim blaming yeah. It is pervasive all throughout society. The concept of learned helplessness itself indicates that our behaviour is affected by our past experiences, so it is irrational and sick to then go on from that to blame the individual for not magically being able to undo the effect

It's a term that gets thrown at me a lot but since I give up too easily I don't really care to argue against it. So what if I learned my helplessness? That's just all the more reason I can't do anything about my situation. It means there's no way for me to unlearn my helplessness.

I hate learning things anyway so for me it feels more like I always had this helplessness in my life.

I think the term isn't applicable in a lot of scenarios and that people only use it to shield themselves from the idea that not all situations can be fixed by anything other than an earlier death

People take a genuinely helpful term (learned helplessness is common in people who grew up in abusive situations. Essentially a pronounced "fawn response" that makes them easy victims as they grow up) and use it to hurt people who are suffering. Such is the way of the internet. Can't wait for the "omg intrusive thoughts :P" and "GASLIGHTINGGGG" people to find this one.

I don't know really. Maybe there's something in it to some extent. Not in terms of laying all the blame on the individual for being lazy though.

Put it this way though. Part of the reason I don't want children is, I don't think I could give them enough of a 'can-do' attitude. For starters, they'd get lumbered with a half share of my (probably) fairly shy genes. Plus- they'd more than likely be poor at subjects that yield the best jobs. On top of that, they'd see that Mummy isn't confident. Mummy worries about everything and she's a complete pessimist. Plus- a cynic. Ultimately- we're all being exploited in this life so yeah- I get it why you wouldn't even want to try! I think my attitude and temperament towards life is very incongruous to success or even contentment in this world. How would it help a child to grow up around that and pick up those traits? Not only would it be a- I'm not sure you can do that. It would also be a- I'm not sure why you should. Why sacrifice yourself to capitalism?

Alternatively, I know a few people who seem to me at least to be natural optimists. I imagine their children will be both loved but, will also be raised with a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards life. At least they have more of a fighting chance.

"Learned helplessness" is a psychological condition where individuals feel they have no control over their outcomes after repeated exposure to uncontrollable negative events. This can lead to a lack of motivation or effort, even when control is possible. It's often linked to depression and anxiety but can vary between individuals.

True, I just gave up trying due to too many failures.
