These rights—such as the right to live, to express oneself, to pursue happiness, and to have agency over one's own life—are often thought to be universal and not subject to governmental or societal interference.

since when did we all become prisoner of the government a bunch of slaves without any rights to leave this life behind if we so choose

It's because people reject pacifism. Violent force is the root of most of humanity's problems. As soon as violence is seen as acceptable there will be governments or gangs telling you what to or what not to do.

Do you think? I think we've had more oppressive times than this... Suicide was illegal in the UK until 1961. That's really not all that long ago. Likely within some of our parent's lifetimes. It may not be enormously better now but, at least you don't end up with a stay in a psyche ward and a criminal record.

My Grandma told me growing up that her mother told her that children should be: 'seen but not heard'. Imagine trying to keep children quiet now!

Even in Roman times, I think it was only people of certain social standing that were permitted to kill themselves. (More peacefully and 'honourably' anyhow.)

I don't really associate choice with being 'God given' either. God is one of the main protagonists in forcing certain choices on us and threatening us with punishment if we don't make the choices they approve of.

Sorry- I'm in the mood to play devil's advocate. 😈

Do you think there's been a time where we have been more free? To be honest, I live in my own little bubble. I likely would't have noticed!

In the past, people had more privacy simply because the technology to monitor and track people on a massive scale did not exist. Today, governments and corporations have unprecedented power to surveil through digital data, social media, and public cameras, which can limit people's sense of freedom. This continuous observation means that while people might have more formal rights, they may feel less free in terms of personal privacy.

Yeah, very true. I expect the bulk of it gets sold to advertisers to sell crap to us we don't need.

Do you think it's worth it still? Like, I can't actually imagine a world now without the internet. Well, I can- it was a lot harder work... Having to go to the library to research something. Phoning director enquiries for numbers. I remember when my friend and I discovered the talking clock. (I spelt it 'cock' to begin with! Lol! That would have been something...) but no- the talking clock. You'd phone and it would speak the time. We were so excited. There wasn't all that much to do growing up...

The thing is that governments exists and can cause actual harm whilst god doesn't exist

Really? That's funny. The weather itself or, the accuracy of the forecast? I'd often like to complain about the forecast... I'm all set up to do something outside because, there's supposedly a 0% chance of rain and splat, splat, splat. Really, it's probably just a whole lot more accurate to just look up!
