I'm not sure, from personal experience those hotlines and stuff did not work for me. Although, if you need someone to talk stuff through you can message me.

I just seem to feel the need to talk to my therapist 24/7, which is extremely unrealistic to say the least.

Do you have any therapist in your area? I'm sure they can help. Also, yes it does seem unrealistic, but there is a lot of people here that are willing to talk to you.

Bit confused by this. I thought Samaritans were supposed to help, how can they ban someone?
I have phoned them in past and didn't find them very helpful, one of them I spoke to was very condescending and told me to cheer up and go and buy a new dress! So much for helping hey. If you have a good therapist (which sounds like you might as you say you'd like to them 24/7) then I'd stick with that and on here as 2 options. I dont find helplines very helpful or therapists but maybe not found the right one.

I think there are some very good Samaritans out there who do help people, but I suppose end the day they have their hands tied. They can only listen, sadly there are no magic wands and however much they want to fix someones problems, they know they cant, so it must be very frustrating for them.

This is why I am loathe to ring a helpline however desperate, its either well worn platitudes or they just dont know how to help/advise or even listen and just make you feel even worse. This is my experience in UK, dont know how it is in other Countries. The day I joined SS was a weight off my shoulders at least, cos got like minded people here and proper support and 1st hand knowledge.

Talking to people is not always about solving the problems, but rather about finding emotional support and someone who cares enough to listen. I'm sorry if people on the hotlines you reached out to did not understand that concept. Their role should be to help people calm down and resolve an acute crisis.

I can understand desiring to speak with the Therapist 24/7. I wanted that as well until I realized that I can't openly speak about suicidal ideation's without potentially getting authorities and CPS called. They become so concerned that we are going to spiral out of control that they need to save us from ourselves, and really we just need someone to listen

this group fills that role a lot better than hotlines and Therapists because everyone here will not judge you for your thoughts about suicide. People here will respect your decision to stay or go, and will be an ear to listen. People here have walked down and are walking down the similar paths and as such tend to be better suited to make people feel cared about.

Yeah I'm in the UK too, I was told to call the helplines too, tried it years ago was like been offered a band aid for a severed leg! When they tell me to call them, I say I will but I know I wont. When you are in a crisis being told to treat yourself and go for a walk doesn't quite help.

Yeah my previous psychiatrist suggested that "some light exercise" was the solution.

In some cases of mild depression I think it's good advice. Trying to talk about things can help too. But I know that in my case and likely the same for lots of people here its like a drop in the bucket.

Well that sucks and I'm sorry to hear that. While I never called nor texted a hotline before (and would rather not due to the risks of being traced, doxxed, etc.), I could see why they wouldn't be helpful for people like us. We have way more issues (some of which have no solutions nor do we have the means to solve them and are chronic and/or permanent) than they are capable of solving. They simply just don't have solutions for us. I do agree and understand that it "may" be helpful for some people with mild problems or just a temporary feeling of sadness or something.

I was told today that the mental health services in my area don't have any record of my diagnosis. That they think it's something else. Its different to what the Samaritans have done with you but I'm probably sharing some similar emotions. I feel quite embarrassed, like I'm at square one again. Like I've somehow crossed a line I didn't intend to.

Yup, we seem to have a similar experience. I talked to them on the phone and via email. What I mainly got from them was a ton of questions, "why do you feel this"... Basically what I had said spun into a question. It can be helpful to try and question things and gain some insight. But I'm pretty sure they could program a computer to do that. "Hey Siri, I want to catch the bus..."

Oh dear this made me smile what you say, but so true, WHY do they keep on asking WHY all the time? Maybe if they did program Siri, the reply/advice would be alot better. I suppose they feel inadequate cos they cant help us and then comes across as not helping, but it truly is frustrating, that is why I searched and found SS when become so very down in December rather than try the helplines again. I wasn't sure what would be like, but its very helpful having like minded people in similar situations to mull things over with. There are alot of intelligent and knowledgeable souls on here.
"Siri I want catch the bus".........." I will find you the timetable!"...............if didn't laugh sometimes you would never stop crying!

I guess it puts the the responsibility on the caller to do the work. So maybe they can't be accused of saying the wrong thing. Little chance of that happening if you are effectively having a conversation with yourself via a proxy. I think this site is helping me too, at least I don't feel completely alone. Your Siri quotation made me laugh! I see you've used Siri before :-)

Honestly didn't know they were allowed or able to ban someone. Doesn't seem very good samaritan of them. Maybe try and call the number or write to them? Not sure what you can do really.

Big surprise there ..
(from SS survey)

200119 0000

I don't think they are helpful even for 'mild issues' . picking up the phone is one of the last resorts, after everyone failed . but it's all "comfort cliches" (things will get better) . I'm sorry , there is no one "there" , they don't really listen . these people are not trained professionals . and even those are not doing that well anyway ..

helpful for some people? -- give 'em candy instead, it's cheaper, similarly useless :)

I even made a written complaint to them about way the one spoke to me, but it got me nowhere of course.

It really makes me wonder about the general perception of depression. Like maybe most people they deal with are depressed because they didn't get a pony for Christmas. So buy some new shit, that will cheer you up! :-)
