Used to have a head full of optimism rainbows, and denial chocolate. I saw so much potential in mankind, and welcomed the dawn of a new era, one of peace and prosperity approaching just over the horizon.
The intelligent application of science and technology to uplift the quality of life for all people, and to repair and conserve the natural environment. Abandonment of the shallow self centered goals of fame, personal gratification and hording of wealth... Abundance for all, freedom from slavery, debt, servitude, and war... Something like what The Venus Project and Jacque Fresco envisioned.
Fast forward to 2022, that innocent twinkle in my eye has definitely started to fade. The grim, unfriendly fuckface of our modern dystopia is now peering through the blinds, mocking all that was good. When I was young, people still successfully robbed banks the old fashioned looney tunes way, with a revolver and a $ dubloon bag. Everything was brilliantly uncertain and the tide was always on the brink of turning at any moment.
Now the level of total power and control has been tightened, the greed gap has widened. The suits and ties have become bulletproof and are purchasing penthouse suites even higher up off the ground, to hock privileged loogies on pedestrian scum from a greater height than ever before. The common person no longer has much hope of taking their own future back, or enacting meaningful change on a global scale. That isn't to say you shouldn't try to help and make changes for the better, but Mordor is bangin' and frodo hocked the ring for cheap bootlegged porn. The Darth Vader fist clench is on full display in all it's glory.
The Great Barrier Reef, one of the worlds most ancient and biodiverse natural wonders is today experiencing its 6th and largest massive corral bleaching event while we promote more reef tourism, because the tourism sector took a blow during covid and people need cash to feed their families. There's talk about whether or not we should put the reef on a world heritage list and call it threatened... Heritage list pffff why not put it on Craigslist. The world is an infinite resource and an infinite garbage can apparently.
We are over halfway through the movie and the bad guy protagonists are being defeated, but we're hitting the part with the interesting plot twist where it turns out the good guys were the villains all along. It's starting to seem like the future is increasingly going to look more like a Ouija Macc music video. Prepare for WASTELAND.
