The word suicide in ancient times does not exist at all. Both Greek and Latin refer to a 'voluntary death'. So there is an element of will in it: at a certain moment you are in a hopeless situation, then it is important to keep the honor to yourself, that is courageous and heroic.

I always laughed at the corporate phraseology "moving forward"

Everything is so undeniably going ass backward around the globe

More so during christianity's early years. People would kill themselves to try to get into heaven. Then they decided to make suicide a sin.

Maybe it was more common but not as much as now. Even religions that arent abrahamic look down on suicide and even if they didnt, how easy do you think it'd be to die in the year 50 bc? It's not like there were N or SN or guns lying around to die painlessly
