i've decided i want to spend the next few years saving up around $50,000 to be able to travel the country for a year. I will buy a van to convert into my home and then start saving up. i love hiking, it is my passion. i will live a year traveling around the us to the most beautiful of hiking locations and spend time doing what i truly love. i'm already a minimalist so i don't have very many things nor do i buy very many things so space won't be an issue. i'm very excited. if my mental illness doesn't get in the way i think it could be achievable within the next five or so years

it's an incredible idea. I made a trip of 6 months cycling the island where I live, and it is one of the best times of my life that I can remember... good luck and I hope you can carry it out.

There's definitely a lot to be said for travelling and fending for yourself whilst meeting people along the way. Somw countries natives are so friendly and helpful. Assuming you're respectful of course. France has some great people. Spain too. I think most countries in the EU would be welcoming. I would say have a change around and attempt to go asap. The truck would be nice no doubt but you can lower the budget with some frugal thought. Second hand vehicle for one. Start looking for work you can do along the route. Just the planning process will get you into a better headspace as you'll know it's coming. Speaking with prospective employers will get you mentally out there. Things like fruit picking are easy to get if you pick the season/timing right. The money isn't great but they'll often feed you and allow you to park up and use their facilities. If your costs are minimal its enough and it's a good way to get info on local stuff that tourists often miss out on. It's a great way to meet people too.

That's how life should be lived if the chance opens up. Work doesn't pay off unless it's for something we love.

WOW!! Absolutely AWESOME! You are a true visionary and I wish you all the happiness in the universe and beyond. Being 65, reference point, and banged up from a car crash, I wish now that I would have done something like that back a long, long time ago.

You see into the future and want to make it happen for a life of experiences and that is just so AWESOME!!!

God speed to you, have a fantastic time, if possible, keep a person informed of your adventures, I will live through you on your odyssey of a life of being a part of the universe, of yourself, and the life experience that I dream about.

Reading you post, makes me very emotional because I am so ultra-happy for you and that you are so forward minded seeing.

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wishing you all the success in the universe and have a great week, my great friend.

It doesn't exist anymore, not in the way it did before and like in Cars, too bad.

There are many hiking trails throughout those parts of course. In this way, it's totally worth it. If you have $50,000

Wow. Wish you do that, i dream of going from NY to LA, stop in little towns, see the views, drive for hours and hours. I know it will take weeks to arrive in LA. You are lucky.

I live in the upper Midwest of the U.S. and if I my body was not so banged up, and with darn Covid and the restrictions, I would love to see the Outback in Australia, take the trans-Siberian from Moscow to Vladivostok, love to see Peru and the Inca sites, a lot of places.

But being banged up and with covid, I will have to see. If my body was not injured, I would be on a plane right now going somewhere in the world.

No, I will never afford to get out on the other end of Europe, let alone the US. I can't afford $50 let alone $50,000. I meant there are, by the look of it, many sights to be seen.

Here's an itinerary

What is Thelma and louise?

Very nice choice Walt. Australia must be damn hot though. As for the trans-Siberian, I can say for sure by memory, tickets aren't that expensive. There is a private luxury rail company although more expensive, because the Russian state one is poor. 8 days each-way.

The Inca trails and especially Machhu Piccu are tough, from what I read. But it surely must be great.

How about Chile? Just take a look.

So long it's like going Santa Monica to Long Beach.
Imagine going the whole length across the highway! And what's more impressive are the changes in weather from north to south. From the Atacama to fjords in the south, Chile really does have those.

Hope it's not long before you go, Walt. The plague can only last so long.

I have been on two two-month USA road trips thus far. If it weren't for COVID I would be off on the road someplace right now. I'm a political prisoner in the U.S. and so my own options for travel are within the U.S. so.... I know my road trips. Don't care much for cities. Lived in NYC metro area my whole life so u.s. cities don't interest me much. My last trip deliberately avoided cities.

In fact: Your above itinerary was half of my drive in 2019. I went from NYC across Iowa and Nebraska (up to Rapid City) and then as far across as Devil's Tower. Then I turned south. PM me if you want any info on trip ideas, places, what-was-great, what-was-not-great. I know lots of places. I'm planning my third two-month road trip as soon as COVID is really over.

Also, if you are going to be van-lifing then $50,000 will get you much further than "a year". My trips were about a grand a week and I was paying for hotels.

I spent a few weeks traveling around the usa myself. I slept in my car most nights. That's how I ended up in my current city. Picked a spot and just up and moved. I'm thinking about doing it again soon. I've been looking up a few different states I'd like to visit and pick a new place to live. I was staying here because I had a job I enjoyed, but high staff turnover has made all of the coworkers I liked leave. Now it feels like a totally different job and I'm having more bad days than good. These bad days are getting me in trouble and I'm fearful I might be fired soon. I just want to go somewhere fresh and start over again. See if maybe I can be happy for a little bit until I start the cycle over.

Sounds beautiful! I grew up in a northern state with lots of snow, so now I'm trying to stick to middle of the usa states. Not overwhelming heat with a few snow falls a year. Vermont gets more snow than any other state I read!

HI! I still live in a northern state in the upper Midwest, and I have to say that I am getting tired of fighting below zero (F) and so much snow. Today was the first day in eons that it hit 30F ABOVE!!!

Summers are AWESOME, BUT winters are so darn long and cold where I live now.

Take care my good friend!

Ha! I've been in New England 13 years now and all I want to do is get to the desert. Pretty much every place I want to visit is west of the Mississippi. I am soooo eager to get back to Canyonlands, and Moab, and Paige -- but that is the most remote place on the continent. So far to get to on a road trip which begins and end in New England.

Yes, New England is delightful and beautiful, and not just Vermont and N.H. Maine is stunning, but also remote.
