Discussion Thoughts on current politics?

Since everyone has their own views on politics, I'd like to know what your thoughts on current politics are — the country doesn't matter.

This isn't made to start fights or anything but to rather discuss and talk about own opinions.

My own view is voting makes no difference whatsoever, we live in a uni party world where politicians no matter what coloured rosette have their snouts in the same trough.
Politicians loyalties lie where the most money is.
They also tend to be absolute mid-wits who scream to me middle-management, busy bodies whose actual use to a business nobody actually knows but they somehow keep failing upward.

mine too. and no one can do anything about it because enough people will either vote for something terrible or the people in power will do it anyway.

I honestly wish that only decent people would have permission to be politicians.
The far left and the far right ones genuinely have me concerned and scared the most.
And the worst thing is that those parties usually get the most votes.

I'll believe anything and support anyone as long as I directly gain from it. I'm also willing to vote based on what's funny to me or what feels like it'll make the most people angry or also change my opinions to whatever just to get people to like me.

For example, a few years ago there was a local ballot measure called "Measure PP". I have no idea what Measure PP was supposed to do. For all I cared it could have increased the tax rate to 110%, mandated all immigrant children be rounded up and executed, and funded fifty useless Olympics buildings and I still would have voted for it. I just thought it would be funny to vote for "measure peepee" so I voted yes on it.

As a Russian, I'm done with literally every politician ever. The good ones have already been killed. There's no one to trust and nothing to believe in.

They are mostly just selfish and power hungry, they don't seem to have any problem lying straightly and the world keeps getting worse so they're not doing anything useful. Most people just vote for whoever is standing against the person they hate to death and the people who actually support their candidate are the worst. Many of the politicians are so detached from reality it's sick, it's like they live in a childrens' cartoon and it's embarrassing. It's completely hopeless.

literally no politician seems decent enough to deserve being voted for anymore.

I think western democracy is coming to an end.

In AI development, there's frequent talk about alignment problems. Essentially, the scoring function - whatever metrics you use to measure success, leads the system astray.

I think this applies for any evolving system, also ones composed of people. In democracy the scoring function is very simple: the score is the amount of votes. As our understanding for how to get votes increases, I think the system is optimized for that. The original purpose of democracy - peace, stability and prosperity, becomes secondary and eventually irrelevant.

As a counter example; in sports and games, the rule sets are changed in an authoritative manner, to keep the competition on track. If you come up with a powerful tactic that goes against the spirit of the game, it will no longer be allowed, the next season. If spear throwing competitions would be judged simply by how far you can throw a spear, the spears would likely be rocket powered.
An authoritative body nudging democratic elections in the right direction, is however not compatible with democracy.

Maybe authoritarianism is better in the long run, or maybe turbulent cycles are a necessity, I don't know.

It's either vote for the devil or vote for another devil. Both are bad, but one is likely not going to align with you as much as the other. Just pick the one that's less bad in your eyes, it's only thing you really can do.
