I was entertaining the idea of going somewhere rural when my time comes, calling the cops and telling them someone shot themselves with a shotgun, and then taking my life. Thoughts?

Nope. What if you pull the trigger and survive? You'll probably be rescued before you even get a chance to bleed out.

You are most likely to get shot by the police instead, or "saved" by doing so. It is in your best interest to not call them or anyone for that matter. Suicide is lonely act. If you truly do want to end your life, then you shouldn't draw attention to yourself or screw up your own plans.

Don't call them. Theres really no need to unless you want to be saved/stopped. Your body would probably be found eventually anyway.

Your hearts in the right place but that would allow for too many unknowns.

Would rather die than be saved and deal with the consequences of trying to kill myself in that manner.

For me, Id never call the authorities if I was going to end my life.

My current plan is to write the local police a "come get my body" email, explaining that I've been dead for a while, then use LetterMeLater to deliver it several hours after my predicted time of death. If I succeed, it's a no-fuss way of alerting the coroner. If I fail --again!-- I have plenty of time to cancel the email being sent.

After one near-disaster during my first attempt (do not trust TimeCave!), subsequent attempts worked well --at least in that I was able to go in and cancel the notification email without any attention.

As for phoning them and then killing yourself? No, that leaves too much room for a rescue with unpleasant fallout. When they dispatch an officer to investigate, for all you know he's arround the corner from your location and will arrive in time to stop you.

I second this. Unless you have an instant method, (like Martin Manley via firearm) and made sure you died on the spot (within less than a minute), there is still too high of a risk of being saved or stopped. Also, even if/when I plan to go, while I would use the firearm method, I would honesty say that I don't have the courage to do what Manley does. He simply had LOTS of experience with firearms and is extremely confident that he will succeed (which he did).

There's also the possibility that putting yourself under the pressure of, "I've phoned the police, now I must succeed" could cause your survival instinct to kick in even harder.

Never underestimate survival instinct.
