I have a theory about depression. It's based on all I've read around. I may be wrong and would like to get feedback from people who may not agree with this.

Basically I believe there's two kinds of depression:

  • Childhood developed depression: chronic depression
  • Adult depression without prior depression= situational depression
Basically a lot I've read about people who experienced depression in childhood don't really recover completely ever. Others may but smaller numbers.

But adults who never had depression and suddenly get it, it's simply due to circumstances that keep them depressed. In actuality their depression is often times less severe than childhood depressives and are able to enjoy things more.
Most times they will be cured once they change their environment because their brains developed correctly in childhood without depression.

That's my theory. I may be wrong, but everything I've read and researched leads me to this. I'd like fpr this to be wrong actually so if someone has a different experience, this forum is the best place to find out.

I'd say I fall in both camps because my childhood isn't exactly great, home life was abusive up until late teens, school life was hell (bullying was a big problem in middle school and early high school), I also had Aspergers and social anxiety which fucks with my social and human development to a degree. In my adult life, while I did succeed in education (got two degrees, a Bachelor and a Masters), I'm still just struggling to get by in life, part time job making ends meet, poor/non-existent social life, and generally just shit life. So in short, I don't believe I'd get better or just come out of it. However, the bottom line is just because I have depression does NOT mean I am irrational nor lack the capacity to make decisions.

type 3. governMENTAL depression . where consecutive world leaders have failed to make the world a caring , safe happy planet instead of just lining their own pockets and that of their millionaire friends while making life harder and more miserable for the normal working person. their answer to any problem in society is to tax it or go to war over it

That sounds a lot like the distinction endogenic/internal versus exogenic/situational depression. I do not doubt some are naturally unhappy and some become so due to circumstances. Conversly there are some who never lose their good cheer no matter how rotten their circumstances.

For me there is two types too: chronic depression and Isolated depressive events. However both aren't mutually excluding. A person with chronic depression could pass for a isolated depressive event that for her is like a depressive peak.

Seems a bit of an oversimplification, but it seems valid that it can be separated into nature or nurture, just like most everything else. I don't know if I was born depressed or if being aware of all the misery and suffering in the world just caused it at a young age. It wasn't really a traumatic event so far I can tell.

I don't think barely anyone is born depressed.
I meant that i think it matters if you experience the bad things when you're developing. Instead of once you're grown.

Those sound like the same types of depression, just experienced at different times. In which case, I am inclined to disagree, as I do not believe that depression is always caused by an event of emotional trauma.

I've heard of out of the blue depressions but honestly none of them are severe or suicidal. Having no reason is highly unlikely

I find your theory interesting. A child who has depression probably has a chemical, and persistent cognitive problem which can severely interfere with them for the rest of their life. On the other hand situational depression which is caused by a change in circumstance is more "normal", since it is a facet of human nature to feel sadness and have a depressed mood if your life is shit. How many depressions out there can be cured by gifting someone a million bucks?

I was just reading about newly paraplegic philosopher, an avid motorcyclist who hit a donkey in Mexico and became a paraplegic. Two years afterwards he committed suicide. Here is the take on his situational depression;
http://www.2arms1head.com/
The issue of whether I'm depressed has come up quite a bit. It seems sort of the default for doctors and others to take that since I am so unhappy, depression is the problem. But this provides little information, and is almost a tautology in my opinion. No, the problem is that I'm crippled. There were brief periods where I felt depressed, but I don't feel that way anymore. I am not depressed, I am tortured, and there is a difference. I'll say plenty more about it below. Everyone knows that I was a healthy and happy man before I got hurt. Everyone knows that paraplegia is my problem, but since nobody can do anything about it, they go for the second-rate answer of just saying I'm depressed. I'm not happy, so there must be something wrong with me, and it's depression, which can be "fixed" with drugs, therapy, or whatever. Imagine a man being chained to a wall in a dark dungeon and told that he was to be there for the rest of his life. He's looking kind of down, so a doctor is called in who pokes and prods him, asks questions, and finally comes up with the diagnosis. "He's depressed." No, his problem is that he is doomed to be chained to a wall for the rest of his life! Interestingly too, if they came up with the cure today and I got better instantly, I could win myself a Nobel Prize in medicine for proving that depression was caused not by anything in the brain is previously thought, but by damage to a few cubic centimeters of nervous tissue in the spinal cord. Because I guarantee I'd pop up and be feeling as merry as a lark in about one second. Of course that is a joke and logically flawed, but you see the point.

Adults who experience a trauma can have a lifetime of depression afterwards, even if their situation improves.
Consider soldiers suffering from PTSD.
