To distract and amuse myself, and hopefully others too, I thought I should start a trivia thread. Contributions are of course more than welcome. A fact check never hurts, but isn't required. So, here we go.

Fact: This time tomorrow, in your time zone of course, an estimated 400 million new stars will have been born in the observable universe. That's 4,800 stars per second or one star every 0.0002 seconds.

Australia has over 10,000 beaches. You could visit a new beach everyday for over 27 years!

There is an uninhabited island in the Bahamas known as Pig Beach, which is populated entirely by swimming pigs.

On one of the islands off the West-Coast of Australia lies Lake Hillier. A bright, bubble-gum pink lake! Despite not being the only colored lake in the world, it is unique because it is the only colored lake where scientists have not yet determined what causes it to be such a bright pink.

In 1969, a musician named Jim Sullivan recorded an album called "U.F.O.", which featured strange lyrics about leaving his family and being abducted by aliens. Sullivan disappeared six years later without a trace, the only piece of evidence being his abandoned car found on a desert road.

Never heard of this before. It literally looks like a dream! Nice one.

Speaking of pink things.

The sky on Mars is pink, or reddish pink, because of tiny iron particles in the atmosphere.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was on a business trip in Hiroshima when the city was leveled by an atomic bomb on the 6th of August 1945. He was close enough to ground zero to suffer injuries, but he survived. He promptly returned to his home city and went back to work despite his injuries. Unfortunately, his home city was Nagasaki and he had to experience a second atomic bombing on the 9th of August. He survived this bombing too, and reached the ripe age of 93 years despite radiation related ailments. It's probably not a surprise to anyone that he devoted his life to nuclear disarmament. Remarkably, Yamaguchi was not the only one to suffer this fate. In fact, this happened to a total of 165 people and they have a special name, nijū hibakusha ("person affected by two bombs").
