On the news we constantly hear the feel good stories about people who saved others from killing themselves in public places or grieving families who have lost loved ones to suicide and have set up charities dedicated to saving other people from suicide. Before I start its wonderful geniuenely caring people do exist to help others in times of distress but at the same time this savour mentality is also dangerous. Its needs to be spoken up more

The savior complex is so dangerous because its creates a situation of guilt where the suicidal person is expected to be grateful for being "saved". This makes the suicidal person feel bad for being suicidal in the first place and can harm their recovery if they are consumed with the guilt, survivors guilt is real. The "Savior" who is continuously active in the saving also its self destructive for them because they are trying are committing themselves to a difficult task which will leave them pain if the results are not want they desire.

I later on found out the admin who builled me out of an online depression support community I used to belong too had an unhealthy saviour complex mentality which the people around her enabled and it ended up leaving a trail of a pain and destruction to ALL parties involved. I learned this about how the admin treated another user on her site by finding a thread from a user.

The admin befriended a severely mentally ill alcoholic woman let's call her E who is a still a member of that forum. E is a troubled woman who is estranged from her kids ( the circumstances are not clear),has a history of losing friendships and relationships with her family due to her self destructive behaviour, mental illness and alcoholism. E has a history of self harm and failed suicide attempts. The admin knowing all this built a personal saviour type friendship with her. The admin met E in real life and even invited E to her house to hang out with her at times. The admin was always advising her on things that troubled E and her mental health issues. E in her post talked fondly of how the admin "changed" her life and valued the admins wisdom. E became co dependent on the admin.

E due to her troubled self destructive personality she struggled to have healthy relationships with people as a result she ended up in a series of online arguments and explosive fallouts with people on that community. When E tried to kill herself at home the admin phoned UK emergency services and an ambulance came to her house. E was furious at the admins decision and lashed out which led to them failing out completely.

E took time off from the forum and when she came back she found the admin deleted ALL her posts and banned her from the forum. She banned her to protect the community and felt Es presence negatively impacted the online community and everyone in it. She made a new account when she discovered that the admin died and felt terrible over their falling out and all the things she done.

Severely mentally ill people need professional help and the admin took an enormous the risk in inviting a stranger in to her life and trying to save her always. Nobody in that community ever called the admin for her saviour mentally complex even when the signs were there.

The admins husband who helps run the site criticised E for never being grateful for the help and support the wife gave her when the wife was alive. The husband criticised her for upsetting everyone on the forum and how everyone is right to be mad at her. The husband even said he wasn't sure if she even deserved to go to the admins funeral as E did turn up to admins funeral as they knew each other.

The saviour mentality was harmful for all the parties involved because.

Admin- The admin got hurt for trying to save this woman over and over again even dragging her own family into her mission to save this woman.

E- feels so guilty that she was angry at the admin for saving her because tne argument she had with the admin was last time she spoke to her before admin died suddenly. E is stil a member of that community and the members hate her for all the online arguments they had with her. She still posts in the community but majority ignore her even after expressing remorse . For 10 years she has been a member of that community. She will get another ban eventually.

Husband- I was so disgusted and shocked reading the husbands long reply because he allowed his wife to bring into their lives a severely troubled woman who needed professional help and support. As a father it is his duty to ensure his wife and kids are safe and he failed to do that and enabled his wife saviour mentality which led to destructive results.

Community- Hate her for all the pain she caused in the online arguments which got vicious

The opposite of the savior complex, that is, apathy and indifference are also extremely harmful. Providing symbolic or direct support that does not restrict individual freedom is a noble act.

@Labyrinth I admit when I was younger I never used to understand why people kill themselves if they have family and friends or kids of their own until i became suicidal in my early 20s it finally began to make sense.

Being suicidal is the worst pain ever and all you want is for it is to stop. The pain is so overwhelming.

The admin of that site even though she had good intentions she was not equipped to continuously support and invite someone so mentally vulnerable and troubled in to her life. The admin was a middle class woman who had easy access to therapists, so much free time because she was not working, she had a community of people in that online community who cared for as well as friends in real life whereas E, the troubled woman didn't have that in place.

Just because the admin was able to manage her depression and anxiety through access to good therapy and anti depressants and manage her condition its NOT the same for everyone. The admin was incapable of seeing that. The admin used to tell me I was making "excuses" when I said I struggled to acess the NHS.

Mental illness and suicide I have now accepted is complex. Mental illness is a battle within one's self which one is to fight and win themselves.

Would you try to save someone that you loved and cared about from themselves? Even though you yourself can relate to what its like being suicidal. Do you think if you were put in a position where a loved one was on the edge of everything and ready to jump off, that you would do everything in your power to save them or would you let them go? Genuine question.

@Aonaiir For a loved one I will openly admit my own suicidal thoughts and use my experiences to connect and convince them not to jump.

If they still jump I need to accept the illness won and nothing I did or said was going to save them.

The problem is that it's very complicated.

A lot of people do get better after being saved from an attempt. They often find new purpose and meaning in life.

It's not black and white.

I've seen a couple of horror stories of people that were saved from hanging attempts that were left completely brain dead to the point they were completely paralyzed and only able to communicate by blinking. I really think there should be some sort of clause that allows euthanasia for someone in that situation.

@DepressedDude In the UK there was this sad sucide attempt case where A 19 year old man called Jack Barnes tried to hang himself and he ended up with permanent brain after he was found

Jack's mother refused to turn off her sons life support machine and he still alive today. Jack needs a round the clock care and has carers washing him, feeding him and doing all those things we take for granted. The mother is so selfish not turning off the machine.

When he was asked if he stil wants to die Jack blinks yes.

I agree, I hate those types of people who want to save everybody from a suicide attempt. If it wasn't for them, I think I would have an easier time trying to kill myself. I hate and loathe humans with every amount of strength that I have. Fuck humanity

@UKscotty But society also needs to say its OK that we don't know the answer to whether life is or not worth living.

People in society are so adamant life is worth living and preserving but the truth is there is no answer.

Whether or not life is worth living it really depends on the perspective of the individual. One disabled person can see thier life as worth living while another can not.

Last year the events of everything that wrong in my life convinced me life is not worth living.

That's one of the guys I read about, luckily he died a couple years later from an infection but yeah the mother is absolutely stupid for keeping him alive like that. It's torture beyond anything I could imagine, things like that is what's scaring me from attempting.

@ijustwishtodie Reading that woman's post I honestly believe the woman should have never told the admin she is in the middle of a suicide attempt her actions led to the admin phoning an ambulance to come to that persons house.

The woman should have phoned Samartians instead. Samaritians everything you say is confidential and they don't phone the emergency services.

The admin as well took an enormous risk bringing a deeply troubled online stranger into her life, home and family when this was not her responsibility .The admin herself is NOT a qualified therapist or mental health counsellor. I was shocked how the woman met the admin in person on multiple occasions and how they regularly talked on the phone and the admin even invited her to eat at her house.

My mum and grandmother always help people in need but still they always made sure there was boundaries and the family home is safe.

I admit I felt so sorry for the woman when she came back to online depression community and found everyone in the community was angry at her for coming back and not "respecting" admins wishes for coming back. The woman is genuinely remorseful for all the pain she caused but community pretty much hate her.

The admins mates and husband were all too busy condemning the woman but nobody called out the admin for befriending and taking the risk of trying to help a severely troubled woman who needed more support from the system.

Admins saviour complex resulted in ALL parties getting hurt but everyone sees her a hero.

@DepressedDude Really I didn't know he died. At least he is free from his pain.

Same here this is what keeps me from attempting sucide. I have been suicidal since the age of 21 and I turned 27 last week.
