How do these pictures prove anything? We don't even know if the person in them actually was permanently affected or even if they're related to an attempted hanging. Attach a medical record or something.

Just leaving photos like that doesn't help at all. To understand and analyze something, context is needed. Otherwise, it's just alarmism that serves no purpose.

Mistakes in the method are easily avoidable. All it takes is a little common sense and understanding how the death mechanism works in hanging.

Knowing that the main goal is to deprive the brain of oxygenated blood flow, then the first thing you should think about is:

1) It's essential to have uninterrupted time alone, without being found and rescued prematurely. The longer the brain is deprived of oxygen, the greater the damage will be.

2) It's important to have a strong and sturdy anchor point and rope (if it's new and you know its working load limit, even better). Never forget to test both; neither should break during the attempt.

3) The correct positioning of the ligature and the ligature knot is essential to lose consciousness quickly; afterwards, you will not feel anything else.

It's a mechanical death caused by the compression of the ligature around your neck, blocking all its structures (arteries, veins, airway), due to your suspended weight/body and gravity pulling you down. So, you have to pay attention to the whole process and ensure that each step is done correctly (with all the aforementioned precautions)

If you can't guarantee any of that, then it's best not to attempt.

The teen was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma but he was left brain damaged after "dying" for ten minutes.

Jack was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when he was 15 and often took out his rage by trashing rooms, cutting himself and punching walls to purposely break his hands.

He first attempted suicide aged 15 and received dialectical behaviour therapy – a type of talking treatment.

But on March 4, Helen heard the front door shut at around 9.30pm and received the heartbreaking text just minutes later.
Panicked, she called police who discovered Jack hanging in woodland an hour later.
Helen says her son was dead for ten minutes before police managed to cut him down and take him to Withybush Hsopital in Haverfordwest.

"He never just popped out or put kisses in his texts. I didn't want to overreact because he had been doing so well so I called the police non-emergency line.
"But knowing his mental health problems, they raised it as an emergency. They found him hanging from a tree in this wooded area.
"The first officer cut him down and started doing CPR. I could never thank her enough, she saved my son's life."

Observations:

1) Suspicious behavior; a message like that would alert any family member or close friend (knowing his condition and past attempts). The call to the police, categorized as an emergency, started the rapid search for him.

2) He was found prematurely (clearly at a critical time). And they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. And then he was taken to the hospital.

We don't know how much time passed between his last message and his attempt (to hang himself).
The mother said that her son was dead for ten minutes before police managed to cut him down. Based on her estimates, since she was not present, we do not know when the son finally hanged himself and how long he was hanging.

Police found him an hour later (after the phone call) and his ligature was cut off. His heart had already stopped, so they performed CPR to restore blood flow and try to revive him.

In other words, a considerable amount of time had already passed, a critical stage (at 15 minutes of oxygen deprivation, survival becomes nearly impossible)

The heart is the last thing to fail in the death mechanism; it will continue to function until it exhausts its remaining energy.

The brain is the organ most sensitive to lack of oxygen and the one that begins to deteriorate rapidly. So, severe and permanent brain damage was a certainty.

It's better to make sure you have at least 30 uninterrupted minutes (with the ligature compressing your neck in its correct position) for your attempt.

3) Choosing an open, rather than a private, location is riskier. Even more so if you have your phone with you, the police can easily track you.

One of the shortcoming of hanging is to take time and potentially lead to a vegetative state if rescued too early while of course hanging is a reliable method if you follow the protocol. It was obviously not a good idea for him to send a message. If you want to tell someone something, you need to use the scheduled message feature Google or Apple put into your phone (though it's possible that the big techs start to censor or report the messages in future if the feature widely used as a way to leave a suicide note).

By the way I can't believe his mother let his pics go public through the news. Where's the dignity of the poor soul?
