If we are talking about what gets perceived as toughness, it's not. A lot of people perceived as "tough" are in reality incredibly easy to upset. Toughness means the swift retaliation that follows being targeted by violence. Tough people are always prepared, always suspecting others of ill-will. That's why they are never shocked when attacked, retaliation is already planned.

It's not about how well you take it, because you can take an indefinite amount and never change the results. It's about how well you give it.

You're right ! Toughness is the ability of a material to absorb energy and plastically deform without fracturing.

So, toughness is not about being an ordinary (verbally &/or physically) violent asshole, it's about being a paranoid violent person who trusts no one & strikes immediately after concluding they're being targeted? What a healthy attitude... Not everybody is in the position to retaliate, especially not swiftly, my friend. Toughness is the ability to withstand pain without losing one's humanity.

If you're so hardened & dangerous, join the marines instead of saying that suicidal people struggling to stay afloat who aren't lean, mean fighting machines aren't strong...

Think you're wrong on this one. At least until you get to know someone, you should never think they have your best interests in mind. For example, being more alert when passing a stranger on the street. Nothing wrong in being aware and prepared.

As far as not being in a position to retaliate swiftly - maybe not. But I see story after story of people getting punched, attacked, stabbed, etc. And I'm not talking the attacker having some huge physical advantage. So often, people just go fetal instead of standing up for them selves . It seems like we live in a world where everyone expects someone else - the cops, coworkers, random people to come to their rescue. Chances are, you're on your own.

Here are two example of this:

Life is very unhealthy.
Not everybody is in the position to retaliate
In reality, it's always a choice. You can always retaliate, verbally if nothing else. If they bind and gag you, you can always look at them angrily.
Toughness is the ability to withstand pain without losing one's humanity.
What if you didn't have any humanity (pro-social emotions) to begin with, then what? Are you being tough withstanding pain, or still a complete sissy?

I didn't say that, that's your own interpretation.

Toughness means the swift retaliation that follows being targeted by violence. Tough people are always prepared, always suspecting others of ill-will.

Telling those who are trying to recover from suicidality (this is the Recovery section) that they should "always be suspecting others of ill will" is incredibly bad advice. You can't heal if you're convinced everyone around you is guilty af until proven innocent. I'm not saying people shouldn't be cautious, but they definitely shouldn't be paranoid either. Paranoia is irrational, it's torturous, it's a symptom of certain mental disorders. Again, this is Recovery, not Off-Topic.

A lot of people perceived as "tough" are in reality incredibly easy to upset. (...) Tough people are always prepared, always suspecting others of ill-will.

Paranoid people are incredibly easy to upset.

In reality, it's always a choice. You can always retaliate, verbally if nothing else. If they bind and gag you, you can always look at them angrily.

This is simultaneously infuriatingly insulting & pathetically laughable. Have you ever been bound, gagged, bent over (so you can't see your sadistic abuser's face), beaten up & raped? Retaliation is always a choice? Looking angrily at a fucking cold-blooded psychopath who murdered your soul is effective retaliation? Shut the fuck up, you clueless idiot. Surviving that kind of abuse without becoming a vindictive person incapable of trusting & loving anyone is toughness.

Are you being tough withstanding pain, or still a complete sissy?

Don't call people sissies on a fucking suicide forum, you disgusting pos. Knock it off with the macho bullshit before I chop off your swinging dick & feed it to your arrogant "tough" ass.

Once you're out of high school and have something of a seasoned worldview, there's no such thing as toughness in the way you describe it. Not that's useful, anyway. There's resilience, there's a developed ability to cope, and there's wisdom to know how and when to engage a situation. Tough is for meat that hasn't been cooked properly.

That's the spirit you big sissy.
Toughness is the ability to withstand pain without losing one's humanity.
Then according to you, lack of "humanity", which i would interpret means pro-social emotions, is the opposite of toughness.

Toughness is about resilience ffs. steel beams don't fight. They endure the weight of the gluttons that walk across the floors that sit on their metal shoulders.
