If anyone is into firearms as a recreation or defense, whether it is target shooting for fun, hunting, or even home/self defense, I'm sure you all have heard of a bill called the Hearing Protection Act in 2015 (or 2017 even). The bill (if passed) would allow suppressors (things to lessen the sound a gunshot by a small amount) to be taken off the NFA (National Firearms Act) list of items, and allow the item to be purchased like any other accessory for firearms.

As someone who likes the idea of shooting as a sport, but is rather uncomfortable around really loud noises and sounds, I find this to be more beneficial towards everyone who shoots than there are drawbacks.

Benefits:
  • People who hunt would be able to protect their hearing more without the use of a lot of hearing protection and also doesn't scare away many other animals in the vicinity.
  • People who are using their firearm for home defense, oftenly in enclosed spaces will not have as much of a hearing damage.
  • People who are new to firearms or those that don't handle well to recoil will be able to shoot more effectively at the range due to slightly less recoil.
Drawbacks:
  • Criminals are able to obtain suppressors without an extensive background check. (Thought I include this here just to fill one reason for the drawback, but in actuality, criminals don't care about the law so whether it is illegal or not, they don't care. Having an extensive background check just hampers law abiding citizens and make it more a complex process to obtain a necessary, helpful firearm accessory).
  • Government might not be able to make as much money. (If there are a lot of people buying suppressors and what not, maybe just add a small tax there and the increase in demand will eventually pay off in the end. For example before the ACT has passed, maybe 1 in 10 people go through the process, pay $200 for the tax stamp and what not. If the ACT has passed, instead of a tax stamp, just add a tax on it for maybe $20-$40 instead and then when more people buy suppressors, eventually the extra customers will offset the one customer that paid $200.)

What are your thoughts about this? Do you agree with the HPA or not, why or why not?
