I think maybe the ban is to show they're unavailable, so PMs don't just look like they're going unanswered? I'm guessing, but that would be my rationale.

Pro tip: pming a mod and quietly asking to be banned is far less dramatic than creating an entire thread devoted to your own absence.

I guess it's a question of taste. The banning is more enigmatic whereas the goodbye thread is transparent.

@Chinaski put your hat on for Chrissake.

The banning isn't necessarily enigmatic, it's just that everybody here is a nosey fucker and needs an explanation for every banning. I personally requested a ban a while back to avoid, not create, drama and I'm sure most people around at that time would understand that given the climate of the forum at that stage.

I don't view either way as "dramatic," although some may use it to that effect.

It's akin to leaving a party. Although it might be tempting to slip out unnoticed, your friends will wonder what happened to you, and why they didn't get the courtesy of a goodbye.

It's more considerate to let them know you're leaving. This means that you can quietly thank the host and make your way out discreetly, ~or~ you can wave your arms in the air and wish everyone goodnight and farewell in a big exuberant gesture.

Maybe you even want to let each guest there know what a good time you had and how much you enjoyed their company.

I don't see any one way as right or wrong, and it never even occurred to me that it might be perceived as 'showy' or staged for effect.

I say you should peace out (or not) however you want, on your own terms.

I'd go with this, in fact l should probably state here that my earlier posts were not referring to the OP who, imo, hasn't shown the dramatic flair often exhibited on here when temporarily departing and my posts may have given the impression that l was being critical of his/her thread, which l was not; l was responding to the absurd assertion that quietly requesting a ban is always done for dramatic purposes.

Having said that, there are occasional instances of people posting threads along the lines of "hey, my [insert name of method] has arrived, I'm not going to be on here much, if at all, as l prepare to ctb, l love you all" and then continue to shitpost in offtopic with the same regularity as previously; you can see why people in genuine ctb situations would therefore prefer a quiet ban in order to focus and prevent themselves from doing this and, given it demands little attention from the community, should certainly not be considered "dramatic", in fact imo it could certainly be considered to be more dignified.

quietly requesting a ban isn't dramatic but asking to be un-banned shortly after is... which is what i wrote in my post... absurd as you may think this is but again I think you're being overly dramatic with my assertion =)

Some people just want to feel what it feels like to be banned. It doesn't feel good.

No more dramatic than logging off and not returning for several weeks.

Really? do you have you to ask the Mods to get back your access after you logged off for several weeks?

i do !...one of the most interesting threads ever on SS...

A thread in which a ban was demanded and then the poster requested it be rescinded on the same day literally fits your definition of "dramatic", so this is a weird position for you to take, unless of course your position is inconsistently applied to individual users depending entirely on how much they piss you off.

PMing a mod is, uh, not dramatic. It demands and requires zero attention from any forum members beyond the mod. Are you being deliberately obtuse?

No I think what he means is that "ghosting" the community after being an active user can be a passive aggressive way of leaving vs just being direct about it.
I appreciate the bans and goodbye posts especially because then we aren't left wondering what happened to users we might have come to care about.

There you go.. being overly dramatic again... Is this like the 31st time you've been in an argument with a member on this forum? Ever ask yourself, if you're not the problem? I think you're my first...

I really fail to see what is "dramatic" in me once again having to clarify a very direct and obvious point which you deliberately fail to understand. If you're going to appoint yourself as the SS arbiter of dramatic conduct l think it's pretty fair that you'll perhaps be presented with a point which challenges that perspective from other users.

PEOPLE WHO BAN AND THEN UNBAN ARE DRAMATIC

actually that's often not true

YES IT IS, IN FACT IF I POINT AT SOMETHING AND CALL IT "DRAMA" IT'S DRAMATIC, THIS IS HOW IT WORKS, I DON'T MAKE THE RULES, NOW STOP QUESTIONING MY INACCURATE OPINION BECAUSE THIS IS AKIN TO ATTACKING ME, YOU BIG BULLY
You called me 'absurd' and 'obtuse'... yet somehow you're portraying yourself as a victim.... good call on all caps, you're point really comes across so much better

Btw, this is an exaggeration for dramatic effect, dontchaknow.

I count 5. Given that one of those reported me to the mods for "pissing on lovemykids' grave", one cannot type more than three consecutive posts without stating something overtly misogynistic and the other three, yourself included, criticised me whilst boosting TheLastTrip in *that* thread, my conscience is pretty fucking clear.

Your first post in this thread was sweepingly critical of many other users ffs, don't do the cry-bully shit eh?

Sad that a goodbye/taking a break thread by one of our beloved users has devolved into this :(.
