I just saw this video about photorealistic graphics of the Unreal 4 engine and I was shocked. For the first time I couldn't tell the difference between computer and real world, at least for the nature recordings, before motion set in:

Suppose you could live in the matrix, where you are happy (no more or only very little pain/depression/anxiety) and healthy, would you do it?

I think I would.

and that's my biggest fear. I've never seen the movie. But I fear ctb will be another dimension with different rules. Maybe no real escape

I pretty much live in the Matrix. If I'm not working I'm in VR lol. Plugged into VR unto I get the courage to unplug from reality.

Only if I could freely mod it (and have the necessary know-how to do so), and if there's an escape hatch that's always accessible.
It takes an awful lot of trust to allow someone else to design your entire reality, even if it's a comparatively nice one, so I would be wary :I.

What do you mean with "live in Matrix"? Because technology is not advanced enough yet. But I have thought about it for days, and there's a problem. In order to be comfortable, you need Artificial General Intelligence technologies inside your simulation. You also need to be able to feel touch, and be able to eat there (unless you plan on eating in your room outside of the simulation). You could potentially have an AI as your caretaker there.

I think video games in the future will be a full virtual reality like this, where you can enter an leave at your own pace. If we could have NPCs behave like they live in a real world it would be really cool to play one of these games.

Another problem would be viruses, they will be able to do much more than just infect your PC, they could try to do something to your brain (connected to the computer) while you are there, so being online there would be a big mistake).

If we are in a giant simulation, then our creators are probably scientists instead of "magical Gods".

I would be extremely pissed if this turned out to be some shitty video game or VR I either had no choice but to play or made the dumb mistake of playing it.

Yes, this could actually be the case. I remember when the first Unreal game came out in 1998. Graphics were good for that time but a joke to what we have today. In 20 years we came from simple 3D game graphics to photorealistic graphics. Where are we in 20 years from now? I mean, we don't even need to go beyond photorealistic because this is the maximum we can see with our eyes in the real world. Of course, we still need improvement to create a full photorealistic VR world and hardware that can handle it.

Like @deflagrat said, the problem is the connection between body/brain and VR. We need to map the human brain first and then we need to detect and interpret brain signals and we need to find ways to manipulate them.

But in the end, think about how much progress we made in the last 20 years. In terms of this planets history, 20 years are absolutely nothing. Where are we in 100 years from now? If this was a simulation, I wonder what idiot implemented high amounts of suffering/pain/depression/anxiety for certain individuals instead of capping it at some point.

@Marawa You should watch the movie, it's really good.
