just throwing that out here to start a discussion. what do you think about them? ever thought of joining (without any religious intention) a cult where everyone transcends together from some N cocktail bowl? i mean a real cult like the ones who existed, not just some people who meet up and then maybe get a shit and make a retreat or even worse, calling 911 out of panic.

I have always been super intrigued by cults. Like, i'm pretty sure I would enjoy a cult. Except it would have to be like a cult of my own making I think i'm just not enough of a sheep to really "work" in a cult environment. In fact pretty sure if i could be more sheepish I would be happier in general but I digress.

Still, I have on more than one sitting tried to google and find existing cults because society sucks and some segregation from it sounds like a great idea but maybe without all the brainwashing, pedophilia, and castractions because fuck that...

Edit: yes, seriously the heavens gate cult castrated people

Considering the sexual abuse, ponzi-schemes, and who knows what else that they're associated with, I'd pass.

I prefer a cult of like minded individuals not a bunch of folks who believe in aliens.

I was just thinking about the whole Jonestown fiasco the other day. They started out as a seemingly normal church. It amazes me to think that any one of us could have easily been born a child that grew up in their "sunday school". Imagine being a kid and being told you were going on a "field trip" to South America with your church. Who wants some Kool-aid?

Their website is still up by the way and it hasn't changed since 90s

After I read your post, I looked it up and spent about a half hour trying to read some of the stuff they posted on the Heaven's Gate website. It's weird as shit. I don't think I could have ever been on board for this one. It seems way too cheesy. You'd have to be pretty damn stupid or desperate to think anything they were teaching made any damn sense. I think it's particularly interesting they had a whole post about their "position against suicide."

Yes you have to be really desparate to believe that shit. I can see why someone would join though. When you dont have a purpose then you try to find it any way possible. I just think it is interesting to read the site. Its like stumbling upon a letter from ww2. Its funny how someone from 2088 might stumble upon something like this forum for instance and see what depressed/suicidal people were talking about at our time.

Two of the members still manage the emails. I remember reaching out a year or two ago about purchasing VHS tapes but noticed people already got around to archiving them. One former member Sawyer retains a YouTube channel and a personal blog.

I considered joining a cult when I was really superlow and lonely. There were times I'd kill for being liked and accepted.
Luckily, I don't give so many fucks now.

its not about finding friends to hang out with, its about if you would join a cult for ctb if you have no other possibility of ctb

and i thought they were fanatic of some special comet that rises every x years and they have to ctb at exact that time, maybe that was a different cult lol

i dont think a like minded cult could exist because of ppl struggeling, so we wont know about it until we know a special person who invites us because we are "trusted" however you want to prove that.

Yeah, I've actually had some experience in joining a few things that were borderline cultish. Nothing quite like Heaven's Gate but I wonder sometimes what I was thinking looking back. Sometimes the people are so nice that it's hard to turn away.

Just a hypothetical question @favourite ...

If you were to join ANY cult in the whole world, which one would you like to try? Serious question.

Tbh I wouldn't mind joining Solar Temple or People's Temple, if they just had better methods of ctb.
I wouldn't join any sex crazed cults or shits like Manson's Family.

what about you, @EddieAllenPoe ?

I'm not really sure. I didn't necessarily mean a CTB cult. If I had a ton of money I've sometimes wondered what its like to go through all the ranks of Scientology. I'm just curious what its like to have a first hand experience of feeling like you're somehow leveling up in life. I don't think that's a serious answer though. You probably don't have to be rich to do that and I don't really have that much of a desire.

If I had a second runner up, I'd like to go back in time and live first hand as a member of The Source Family. They have a good documentary on it I watched once and it seems wild that ever actually happened. It actually didn't seem like it was all that bad of an experience. I'm honestly kind of jealous of those people.
