I always remember in my 20s and seeing my first therapist who asked me if anyone in my family suffered from mental health problems, I said my grandad did and had hung himself because of it. He then said suicide runs in the family and could be down to genetics. This is the main reason I didn't have children as I didn't want to give them this.
What are your thoughts?

There is a 50/50 chance of some genetic illness being passed to a child. I was talking to someone who felt the same as yourself. The one thing you have over another parent is your ability to empathize with what that child is going through even being able to see the signs should that child develop it. I definitely understand someone not wanting to see their child going through that pain in the first place. There is no definitive or perfect answer. Sorry, if this doesn't make sense.

I also don't want to have kids because of my mental health issues plus the fact that I just don't want any in general

I'll take a dog too, preferably either a German Shepherd, Bull Terrier or a Pitbull

I can't even go food shopping anymore as the shrieks of children drive me mad.

I think you're right. For me it started at 14-15 and became much worse around 19.
At that age I decided I would never have children even if my GF insisted, I know firsthand what it is to live with that condition so I didn't want to take the risk. Then things got out of hand and that just confirmed my decision.
My psychiatrist told me too that since my mother was depressed there are chances that it is genetic.

Looking at my family history my grandad killed himself and my nan tried to gas herself. Mom took an overdose and I know my sister did too and my brother slit his wrists.

Well i'm by far the worst case in the family as far as i know.
My mother had suicidal tendencies during difficult times of her life, like her divorce from my father, but she doesn't have it anymore.
My maternal grandmother actually tried to kill herself with pills after having a fight with my grandfather.
My maternal grandfather's mother went crazy in her late years.
But i doubt that anyone in my family could match my level of suicide desire and my depression levels.
On my father's side they are all mentally stable, except for my aunt.

Your family sounds like mine: My mother, grandmother, aunt and two cousins all killed themselves. My sister and I have both declined to reproduce. But that's not because I think it's genetic; I believe it's more like a pattern that gets established. Once a close family member offs him/herself, suicide becomes an option for others.

Wanting children was what kept me going for the longest time. I always wanted two kids where I would teach both of them ballet and math in a gentle environment.

I wanted to give them the opposite of what I got.
