Here's the reply I got from Pegasos:

I am 42 which is not that young - and why can mental illness not count as a reason. Sucks to Pegasos. The swear word in my head is louder than that though.

Hi J
Thank you for your email.
Given your relatively young age and mental illness, we are sorry but Pegasos would not be able to assist you for a VAD at the current time.
Instead we would be obliged to refer you to counselling.
We are sorry we cannot help you.
Kind regards
Peg

Here is what I replied. It's the best I can do - I am not thinking straight because there are suicidal thoughts bombing through my head and panic.

I have had a lot of counselling for over 10 years of counselling, from individual therapy to group therapy.

While I understand you have to have criteria to protect what you do, you must also know that there is a lot of chronic suffering from mental illness which is untreatable.

Do you take people with chronic mental illness over the age of 50? I know lots of people suffering so it will be helpful to know whether Pegasos offers them any hope of their suffering ending.

My other option is to kill myself at home, and that is a cheaper option than Pegasos, so at least this is a money saver.

I am disappointed that you cannot be of assistance in all these years of suffering, not just for me, but for others suffering from chronic mental illness.

Regards

J

Literally the next day.

I mean it is a LOT of money so doing it at home is cheaper. And for me actually less scary.

I just think it is so unfair that people with chronic mental suffering get no support to end their own life (apart from in the Netherlands if they are citizens)

Good reply you wrote. You do us all a favour with that.

I wrote them yesterday and still no reply to me.

With the amount of people who've been rejected, we can say with certainty that anyone under 50 with a mental illness will be rejected. It will be interesting to see if they accept older people with mental illness

That fucking sucks for sure.

Can understand what you are going through.

But really here in Netherlands with the clinic they also reject 50% of all applications. I got trough the application what really is being lucky.

After even if you got trough the amount of people who get euthanasia is also almost 50/50.

I am in the last part of my euthanasia process. Its pretty scary to think after almost waiting 2 years since August 2018 to get rejected in a few weeks end of this month.

So as i see it for you.
You are lucky on the part they rejected it now. Because now you know what you need to do. But i do understand the reaction you have and feel.

Thank you - you are all right. I would rather Pegasos exists in some form, even if it is not for me - and likewise Exit International, as what they do is useful for so many.

And this does mean I don't have to spend that crazy amount of money - so I can leave it to my family. I'm sure it is better this way.

Thanks everyone.

And this is what would happen. Pro-lifers would go nuts and destroy them. So I can understand them in some way. Still sucks for us though :(

Oh man, 42 and being treated like a child. What are they thinking. They are just covering they're asses. If they cared about people they wouldn't factor in age with illness. Because illness doesn't discriminate against a persons age. Frustrating.
On a side note I consider 18 young but still an adult.

I'm sorry that they have rejected your application even given your circumstances. Psychological illnesses are certainly much harder to gain approval through those organizations as they have a much higher threshold to satisfy as compared to terminal, and physical chronic illnesses. I do hope you are able to find peace in other ways.

I do agree and that they have their uses, especially for really dire situations not limited to terminal illness but even chronic permanent illnesses and severe disability, up to the point where their quality of life is near non-existent and almost losing even the psychological and physical capacity to self-deliverance. If I lived in those areas that allowed assisted suicide and euthanasia, and had a severe debilitating condition like quadriplegia, ALS, or late stage MS and was going to suffer immensely, they would be really helpful in such situations. Or if I am the 70/80 year old patient with waning health and ever increasing health complications, etc.

Call final exit and ask about exit bag options and how they can assist .. might be better option

I would be really surprised someone would qualify for euthanasia by simply writing an email !!
No offence, but that sounds a little gullible to say the least !
At least they would require reports from doctors & psychologists to look into your case.

What I really wonder about is what are the criteria for mental problems to get euthanasia ?
I read that in 2016 2000 patients with mental suffering were granted euthanasia here in Belgium.
So it's possible but what criteria do they use ?

You probably start with an email and then they ask you for documents but they just cut it off so...

I want to apply for VAD at Pegasos also. The reason is because of severe iatrogenic brain damage caused by psychiatric drugs. They were supposed to help depression but destroyed me completely over my lifetime because they just kept cold turkeying me off the meds and putting me on even more dangerous ones.

I am wondering though, how do they actually know a person has mental illness since it is 100% subjective? Can't you just put something else down on the application as a reason that has nothing to do with mental health reasons? There has to be an easy way around the mental illness barrier, right?

Can't you use a brainscan to prove there's physical damage ?

That' just it, they can't prove mental illness, there's a reason why psychologists/psychiatrists don't do a medical examination, they just try out meds on you and hope one works.

I have SPECT scans that shows brain damage caused. I just wish I could say I don't have a mental illness and I'm just bored of living and get it over with already.

They should be open for emails. I'd just explain your situation from a more physical perspective. Don't say you have mental illness if that's what they reject people for.
