Have you ever tried the potato diet ?

I haven't been walking that much over the past month and a half because I've been kind of sick with a constant runny nose, cough, and sore throat, Also the weather has been crappy with lots of very cold temps along with some cold rain and then ice everywhere.

Anyway I just weighed myself and I weighed 175.6 lbs. which is actually very good for me since I haven't been walking or fasting lately or even cutting back on food. But the bad news is that my blood sugar levels are 429 !!! Since I've been lazy about walking lately I've decided to try the "potato diet" for a week and see how it goes.

Your first thought might be "WAIT WHAT !!! POTATO'S ARE HIGH IN CARBS AND WILL RAISE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS YOU IDIOT !!!"

Well I just learned that every time you cook a potato and then let it cool down it forms resistant starch that will actually have no impact on your blood sugar levels !!!

As a side effect this diet will actually help you lose all the weight you want because a medium size potato only has about 150 calories in it so your daily calorie intake will be greatly reduced. I figure I'll eat at least 4 medium sized potato's a day maybe 6 at the most. Even if I ate 8 potato's a day that would still be only around 1200 calories a day which is probably less than half of what I normally take in on a normal daily basis for me.

Anyway I'll post updates to let anyone interested to know how it's going.

Feel free to start this diet yourself and leave updates on this thread.

Time to eat my first potato's ! : ) I cooked 4 of them in the microwave yesterday then put them in the refrigerator after they cooled down and now I just reheated 2 of them in the microwave.

There was a bloke who I work with who did this for a while, and then when he reached the weight he was happy with, did it twice a day to maintain his figure. He found it difficult, but it worked quite well for him - so good luck!

Never heard of it before and I will not cheat using Google. What does it do? Stop you from turning into potato by making you eat only potato? Sounds logical. :-)

I've heard about it before. I mainly eat Keto to help with my moods and autoimmune ailments. I still have bad days, but it's been a bit better with this diet.

You don't have to live like you are in aushwitz dude. Just stop eating sugar and stuff that has a lot of carbs. Eat a lot of protein stuff combined with some carbs and vegetables and fruits. Of course you have to eat less but thats it, you will lose weight.

Just try it dude. Maybe you'll eliminate something that you react badly to and anyway any radical dietary change has an effect for a while where you lose weight and become more conscious of your eating habits. Also monotony prevents overeating.

Hello there! I haven't posted anything on the forum yet, but I feel like I need to respond to this.

First of all, a blood sugar level of 429 is in the realm of a medical emergency. It would be a really, really good idea to see a doctor about it if you haven't already. And if you have, it would be a really good idea to see them again and talk to them about your diet, if that's something you're having trouble with. There are just so many falsehoods and half-truths floating around YouTube and the internet in general, especially when it comes to nutrition and weight loss hacks. Eating only potatoes for a week probably won't do any long-term damage for a person without diabetes (definitely won't do any good either), but why would you risk your health by adopting such an extreme regime you saw online, especially with diabetes? No nutritionist or doctor in their right mind will tell you that this is anything other than a terrible idea.

In fact, eating less than 1200 calories a day in the form of any single food without medical supervision is such a terrible idea that even people with hundreds of pounds to lose aren't told to eat that little, and definitely not to eat just one type of vegetable. For anyone tempted to try out this regime for a longer period of time, you will be putting your body under so much stress with the enormous caloric deficit, and you will be restricting your intake of protein, fat and most vitamins and minerals so severely that your health will undoubtedly suffer. And since you won't be consuming any protein, your body will literally start breaking down the protein in your muscles because it needs it for things like hormones and enzymes preferentially. So you won't be losing just fat, but lean muscle as well, and your metabolism will be slowing down right along.

Apart from all that, and this is the most relevant point, very little of the starch in a potato undergoes retrogradation (becomes resistant), so the effect on your blood sugar will essentially be indistinguishable from just eating regular potatoes. You can test this yourself if you don't believe me, just measure your glucose level after you eat one of the potatoes you've prepared. It's a myth, cooling and reheating your potatoes won't make a dent in your blood sugar.

Not trying to scaremonger, just feel like I need to warn you that unreasonably restrictive diets are always a very bad idea, and doubly so for people with diabetes. Of course, it's your choice, but I hope you reconsider, especially since you only want to try it out for a week, which isn't long enough to see any benefit from it anyway, even if there were any benefit to speak of. I just don't see why you would choose to suffer needlessly...

Microwaved potatoes are awesome. I like to eat them topped with hummus, guac, or cottage cheese. Sometimes I'll steam frozen veggies to have on the side.

couldn't have said it better. I would just like to add that drinking water is essential to lose weight so make sure you drink enough through out the day and have a balanced diet that provides the nutrition your body needs.

just looked at video its not worth effort for less than 3.5lbs a week he said and you'll crave proper foods so pile on after u stop it

I'd be weary of this because your body won't be receiving the proper nutrients that you need from a variety of foods. Have you talked to your doctor about your options? At the very least, consider taking a supplement each day and in addition I wouldn't advise doing this long term because you don't want to deprive your body of what it needs.

I admire your dedication and potatoes are delicious, but I'm not sure that it's a good thing in the long term.


I actually lost 15lbs in one month without starving, excessive exercise, fasting, or eating less than 1,000 calories/day. I started keeping a food journal (no restrictions) and using a tray instead of a plate to separate my food. I switched out regular meats for turkey alternatives and its been going quite well for me.

Either way, I hope that your body doesn't "crash" and that your new diet works out for you the way that you'd like it to. Please update us.

So yesterday I ate 3 potato's with black pepper only on them and drank about 1 gallon of water. When I woke up this morning my weight was down 1.6 lbs. and my blood sugar levels were down 94 points !!! So far I've eaten 2 potato's today with black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika on them and have drank about half a gallon of water. So far I'm not hungry at all and I'm not craving anything.

I don't have a doctor, health insurance, a regular job, or enough money to see a doctor about anything lol I am taking a multivitamin, vitamin D and SuperBeets every day. I actually lost over 30 lbs. in 1 week twice by going without carbs for about 3 or 4 days and then having a carb load pig out meal lol My body and my life already crashed about 2 years ago. : )

Eating the potatoes, no problem. But how are you gonna eat them without some toppings. That is some flavorless life, yikes. You must have very strong will.

I don't think this will be the miracle diet you're hoping for. Before doing any research at all, I spotted several potential problems.

It's boring as hell. Boring diets with little variety are generally impossible to follow for long. Maybe you have amazing willpower and don't care. I don't know.

Chance of malnutrition is very high. That's dangerous.

Very low calorie diets usually lead to your body not losing weight. You're replicating starvation, which will tell your body to hoard calories.

I looked it up and probably found the same study you did. In it, they only used boiled potatoes and discussed adding vinegar. It apparently matters how big the potato is and how it's cooked.

Potato famine is a real issue man. I don't see it as any sort of real diet though trust me. I'm an athletic guy and this all seems fake to me.

Thank you for reminding me that I have yet to get off my lazy ass and unscrew my microwave to try to fix it...
I'm planning to do it tomorrow because I'd love to have some spiced potato again. Hopefully it'll be no more than a blown fuse.

As for the diet, I think it's worth giving a try. Good luck.

What about burnout? Make sure u still occasionally fit in some other food too otherwise I doubt it's realistic to stick with it very long.

So 44 hours after first weighing and testing myself and starting this diet I'm down 3.2 lbs. and my blood sugar levels are down 97 points. They only went down 3 points during the last 22 hours. I'm eating 1 and a half potato's right now and will test my blood sugar an hour after I finish to see what effect they have on that. I took some beet powder yesterday morning which contains 3 grams of sugars so not sure which had a bigger impact on my blood sugar levels yet.

So almost 2 hours after eating 1 and a half potato's my blood sugar levels rose 95 points. Next I would have to eat 1 and a half potato's without cooling them down and reheating them and then test my blood sugar levels 2 hours later to see If it makes a difference.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to stick to this very long at all. I'm already thinking about adding eggs, chicken, and fish to this diet and just turn it into a low carb low calorie diet. I'm trying to lower my blood sugar levels and hopefully lose 10 lbs. asap as well. If I can do both by diet instead of walking 5 - 10 miles in the cold crappy weather and fasting then I'll be happy.

I'm trying to lower my blood sugar levels and hopefully lose 10 lbs. asap as well. If I can do both by diet instead of walking 5 - 10 miles in the cold crappy weather and fasting then I'll be happy.
I'm diabetic too, so I understand your struggle. Are you not seeing endocrinologist and getting insulin?

As far as diet goes, there are a lot of vegetables that you can eat that won't affect your blood sugar. Take a look at the glycemic index and it rates foods so you know things that are good to eat in your condition. If you do go heavy on the vegetables you will automatically get less calories.

I don't usually support fad diets, but maybe you should look into the keto diet. It's low carb which is good for your blood sugar and high fat and protein which seems counterproductive but somehow it really works for a lot of people.

Do you like pasta? If you do there's this product called Miracle Noodles you should check out. They are shirataki noodles which have like no carbs and no calories, but they're very similar to actual pasta I found. Especially if you do something like put them in a stir fry or something with a lot of sauce they're pretty good. They won't fool you in spaghetti I think, but they go super well with Asian style foods. They also are basically all fiber and are a zero on the glycemic index which helps with your blood sugar. If you happen to live in the US you can get them at Walmart for super cheap.
