I'm older than many, younger than some. I struggled for decades (!) living on the edge of total poverty. Here are some recipes that involve simple, not exotic, ingredients. Soups are still my number one way to eat. Easy and super nutritious. As for the coping emotionally, nothing is sure-fire, but here are a couple of straight-ahead books and a couple others, all with easy to digest ideas and tools. Life is hard, no doubt about it. The systems in place (socioeconomic) and the necessity of living in contact with our fellow mostly horrible naked apers is "Hell" for the vast majority. Music and art and nature. It's all we have. Literature, culture.

At least learn and create art until the time a peaceful pill that is accessible and inexpensive comes along (veterinary N's caustic chemicals and gag-inducing taste, not to mention outrageous price tag does not, for me, qualify as such). I feel for all the miserable souls out there (I don't believe in souls or anything of the sort, btw).

A peaceful, non-violent exit is everyone's right. But I admit, I'm disturbed by the number of really young folks who want to CTB due to anxiety abt independence and surviving on one's own and their lack of know-how and support. I've been there for decades, It only take one supportive person in college counselor's office to make a difference and then you take it a day at a time. It is a constant struggle to stick around for me personally. But until then, I'm going to eat healthy, not go broke, and be able to go out on my own terms not anybody else's.

Just be your own best friend and backing off the social media bullshit is a good start. It's all a bunch of superficial tripe. You're just playing into Big Tech's playbook for popping their quarterly profits. Fuck 'em. Unplug. Ciao.

I love the recipe ideas. Thank you. Maybe that could be new thread of it's own someday? I sort of live "off grid" as the kids would say so I usually have to get creative with my cooking. I was able to buy an instant pot with the air fryer attachment recently (they're kind of spendy) but they cook just about anything and everything and makes things so easy.

I 100@ agree with @edu0z and he is spot on, you are an awesome soul! Also, I 100% agree with @Looooser, as I love to cook, and I find the recipes and ideas so very interesting.

We are all together here and your post says that so very clear, you are just so thoughtful and caring, your post really struck a chord with me as how together we all are here.

Thank you so very much and like @Looooser suggested a new thread of recipes and ideas sometime?

Have a great weekend.

I feel such a sense of community too (I had a different handle prior, but ditzy me forgot my password (could it be the melatonin that's made me into such a space cadet? Gads). Thank you for the thank yous. I collect a LOT of free PDF books from internet archive and will post if germane. One book that is GREAT on living cheaply is YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE by Joe and Vicky Dominguez. I'll provide a link below. Learned much from that book for sure.

I'm making chicken veggie, tofu, bean, quinois in two pots. It's cheap, excellent tasting with curry, Mrs. Dash, onion, garlic, and cheap--it'll lasr for many days. I can eat as is or with apple sauce or scrambled with eg4gs, on and on. This is pretty much the way I live and minimize my wage slavery and gain as much freedom financially as I am able. If I can just curtail my damn Amazon addiction!

You are such a thoughtful and giving spirit and yes, please post, if you feel like it, recipes and the like, I am on my Social Security here in the U.S. and I watch my spending on daily living.

You are NOT ditzy or any form of said such, heavens I make hiccups each and every second and you are Brillant compared to me.

Thank you for being a good friend and for being so thoughtful.

Have a great upcoming weekend.

Thank you for the kind words Walter. I'd insert one of those smiley faces, but I must've missed that class in school.

Great idea re: recipes on the cheap. I believe STRONGLY in cooking high quality meals for myself. I won't eat like a cave dweller or as the numbskull I was when I first left home. Everyone deserves self-respect and I've learned it's so meditative prepping the veggies and doing all that stuff. It's not a chore at all if I have the right tunes in the background.

I just turn on Marcin Wasilewski or Mark Knopfler or Delbert McClinton and have a feally good time. There are so few activities and moments in which I can find joy, but cooking is one. I love the smells permeating the house and knowing great meals are being prepared stovetop I've never baked anything but a pizza and a few ideas--but those were half-baked.while I diddle on my laptop and listen to music. The world may be hell, but I shut it out firmly with all these sensory elements and activities. We find what works, right?

The author of the book below saved my life more times than I can count. Never met her; only read her books. Her books are filled with practical, workable advice. I continue to turn to her books as I face hard times. Better than any therapy I had, I'll tell ya that. I just love that woman.

Barbara Sher passed on some years ago and was a friend of a friend. She was the real deal, I heard; an authentic person who had struggled herself and emerged with these fantastic ideas and suggestions, all presented in the most loving, supportive way. Best of all, she eschewed positive thinking as a necessary element.:)

I'm so glad you're a fellow "soupie". Honestly, I think the only thing I've ever had in the oven--besides my head (kidding)-- is frozen pizza. I'm totally a stovetop person. Besides, it's harder to ctb sticking one's head into a boiling pot of minestrone. Though I might choke to death doing so while gobbling voraciously. Man, I just love stovetop cooking and soups. Tonight I put some butter and avocado oil and salt-free seasoning and curry into a nonstick pan, heated it, then put in a defrosted salmon filet (bought a lg. bag at Walmart for less than $12.00). Once I cooked it on one side, I flip it over and added chopped onions and three eggs. OH MAN! The smell in my house is amazing! I hope my roof doesn't have any leaks or else I'm gonna be splattered with racoon saliva all night and I'm so not into bestiality porn. though I dig the mascara.

Oil onions and salmon , that brings a good smell into the air. I'm living alone so cooking is for myself and gosh I'd love that good meal. I'll try a soup on my rice-cooker over the weekend. I won't ctb this weekend, that's for sure.

That's the catch..once you evaporate back into space dust, you'll never be able to enjoy the process of cooking and the pleasure of eating great meals you made for yourself. I'd miss that horribly. Not the cleanup! But the prep, the selection of ingredients, the cooking, the adding of seasonings (lately I'm really into curry), and yes, that fantastic lingering aroma. Just made the same dish now adding a bit of salsa to the mix. The raccoons are going ballistic.

I just realised there's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck on here. Read Sher's Idea Book and now I'm going to read the former - started reading it years ago and never finished. Thanks, @KimKevorkian!
