Hi everyone!

So when I decided to start lurking and then join the forum I was pretty suicidal, obviously. But things have gotten significantly better. I've sort of had this happen before, I get super low periods and then stabilize pretty well for a while! I am at a good place right now but I want someone to know how bad I got for a while. Some people, like my mom, are aware I've dealt with mental illness and certain tendencies but I don't really tell anyone in the moment.

I don't want to be hospitalized, especially with finals coming up, but I want to confide in someone. I am thinking about talking to one of my professors, with an emphasis on the fact that I am currently safe and not going to hurt myself or anyone else so that the mandated reporting and hospitalization isn't a risk.

That said, I don't know how to go about this exactly? Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you guys, by the way! <3

Though situation. I'm almost certain professors are obligated to report your scenario regardless of you saying that you're no harm to yourself currently. Is there friends you can reach out to?

That's rough. I do have some friends and a partner I could speak to, I am just worried about burdening them or anything like that. But I'll try that out, thank you!

An anonymous crisis hotline might be helpful, but you have to take the luck of the draw.

If you feel like really talking to someone irl, then your best bet would be your closest friend or partner. . I know you don't want to burden anybody, but that's usually how it'll go if you'll open up to somebody who cares about you. Your professor should be a definitive no, atleast for me. Also, why do you think you want to talk to somebody about this, now that things have gotten significantly better for you?

Wish you the best <3

Thank you, that definitely helps. That'll probably be what I go for at this point.

I guess I'm not super confident it will last, considering the number of times I've ended up dropping off again. Plus I think I am still processing it, I guess! But honestly talking and listening to people here has been extremely helpful for that. There have been times where I get a huge personal revelation through just a comment from someone.
Wish you the best <3
Thank you! I appreciate your kindness a lot. <3

In most jurisdictions, there is no obligation to report people unless there is an indication of imminent harm to oneself or others.

A professor may be a good person to talk to, but it might be better to go to your student resources office, as they will be trained to assist you. Most universities have many resources available to people who are struggling, it happens quite often as you might imagine. Depending on the situation, student resources may even help with accommodations during testing. Good luck!
