She used me as an emotional punching bag, made me feel like I didn't matter, and only gave a shit when I attempted. I know I "ruined" everything with her, but she's seriously the closest thing I've ever had to love, despite her saying multiple times that she didn't care about me. I don't know whether the relationship was based on lies, if I fucked up, or if she did, but I can't believe *that* is the closest I've ever had to love. I deserve so much more...

There is a strong correlation between our adult intimate relationships and prior childhood experiences with parents and caregivers. When we are mistreated as children, it normalises abuse in adult relationships because the mind is more attracted to what is familiar than it is to healthy intimacy. If this applies, it is very helpful to be conscious of it.
