Self strangulation

I'm currently in a psych ward in the UK under a section 2 which is due to expire at the end of May. Just been speaking to some of the staff who have said it is likely that I will be detained under Section 3 once this section lapses. The problem is, I want to be dead before June comes.

I have shoelaces in here, and I was thinking about tying a slip knot into the laces, putting my head through the loop and tightening it enough to strangle myself. Would the shoelaces be able to accomplish this or do I need to use something thicker? Since it's a psych ward there are literally no anchor points to try partial hanging. Any advice is appreciated.

Oh my God ! This reminds me of the English playwright Sarah Kane. She killed herself in a psychiatric ward where she was taken for attempting suicide with pills ... she killed herself with shoelaces on the bathroom door handle.
What happened to you if I may ask you? I'm sorry you are in this situation ... :(

I was reported missing a couple weeks ago and this led to me being pulled over by the police while I was in my car. They searched my car, but not me. Removed some things from my car like screwdrivers and knives because they had concerns about me harming myself. After that they let me go. The next day, I still hadn't returned home and I received a text from a police officer informing me that I'm still reported as missing and that they are concerned etc. I really wasn't in a good place in my head, and out of panic, I took an overdose on pills. I was scared about getting searched again as I had SN in my pocket. Didn't take the SN because I didn't have any anti emetics, my plan wasn't fully complete for the SN.

Looking back I know it was really stupid and I should've just used the SN, but I remember thinking that I don't want to die while throwing up and alone in the middle of nowhere in my car. Long story short, police found my car because of an ANPR camera that had pinged my location nearby. Taken to hospital and then later sectioned after they had discovered my SN and suicide note. The SN had no labels or packaging etc so the source is still safe.

I just really need to know if the shoelaces are going to be enough to successfully strangle myself with.

I am very sorry for what you are going through ... I understand what it means to be desperate and lonely.I don't know how to help you on the laces .... I used the belt of the bathrobe and even though I fainted then I recovered with my head I was bursting and my neck sore. I have failed several times with this method unfortunately

I tried to do this before with self made rope, but it didn't work. I didn't pass out. I can't find the right spot.

Well I can find the sweet spot pretty easily but it seems too high up in my neck for where I'd tie the laces? I can make myself pass out using my hands I'm assuming it would be the same experience with the shoelaces.

I don't know ... are you sure you don't want to wait to get out of the hospital? maybe it's safer and you would avoid any problems

Without access to a doorknob or something of that nature someone can be successful with the tourniquet method. Something as small as a shoelace or paracord can be used with a small knot. A strong stick or wooden spoon would be needed to slowly twist and tighten the tourniquet beyond the tightness of our physical 'pulling and tying a knot' strength. Someone would also need to locate, precisely, their carotid arteries for pressure effectiveness. Due to your lack of proper material and time constraints I wouldn't attempt it. I'm sorry. I know it's not what you want to hear and the thought of a possible escape is comforting, I'd hate for you to try and open a new can of worms.

You could try a version of the night-night or torniquet method or any method involving carotid artery compression. Also in most countries, force feeding is illegal, so refusing all food and drink is a good method for people on suicide watch since there's nothing that can be done to prevent itl

I also tried doing this in a UK psych ward a few months ago. I tied two shoelaces together, trapped one end in my bathroom door (which was a proper door, not slanted) and tied a noose at the other end. Best I managed was to feel like almost passing out, it was self harm at best. I'd recommend waiting, give them a chance to help you while you're there because if you resist you'll just be there longer. I was on a section 2 then 3 and then informal, I was inpatient for 3 months. It sucked and I even managed to self harm without them knowing, but never managed a proper attempt because it's so god damn difficult in there

Honestly, I admire your determination, but this is highly unlikely to work and if staff find you doing it you'll probably get all your laces taken off you plus you'll get a longer stay. What's the big rush in needing to go before June?

I had never heard of her before, but that's quite a feat managing to do so in a ward.

It's totally bizarre, I mean I don't understand why there was a "hook" in the door of a psych ward but even so it sounds like an impossible setup to me.

No, it hooked on the knob of the bathroom door if I'm not mistaken... kind of partial hanging
But yeah...I even failed with a belt, can't imagine with shoelaces.

Ahhh.. when I was in a psych ward, there weren't any knobs. I failed with a pull up bar and I think sheets.

No honestly the way it was designed everything was anti-ligature. Attempt was a different time.

I tried that and i found out partial hanging was more difficult than i thought...at least for me
