I want to die so bad, but it's just not that easy to commit suicide..Every way has its share of survival stores, most ways have more than a 50% survival rate. That's just not acceptable to me.

I am down to only a few viable options: Cutting my carotid artery with a knife(very painful and no guarantee of success), or getting a 9mm handgun and shooting in my mouth toward my brain stem. I considered a shotgun, but too many things can go wrong due to the length of the shotgun. Right now, I am waiting for a check to come in the mail so I can buy the 9mm handgun, but I am so worried about failing and ending up disfigured or worse.. I just want to die quickly and as painlessly as possible, but it's so hard to find the right method. I am also considering the charcoal grill method, but that seems too easy to mess up and end up with permanent brain damage. Anyone have any tips on exactly where and how to aim the gun to ensure a greater chance of success?

Note: I would buy a larger caliber gun, but I will only be able to afford the 9mm with the money I am getting.

May I suggest you don't try cutting any part of yourself? I've been a medic for a long long time. You get an adrenaline response when you cut yourself, this will kick your survival instinct in. Also, it takes awhile to insanguinate, and you're right, it's painful. Once had a guy actually manage to cut deep enough across his throat, he laid down and waited to die but didn't. The angle he held his head at allowed for clotting off of the cut veins. It is extremely difficult to cut your own neck deep enough to die. You almost have to cut through your own windpipe to cut deep enough to sever the carotid arteries. Just cutting the jugular veins, which are much closer to the surface would be an agonizing slow and scary way to go. Check out the tips tired horse has put up about firearms.

Pointing the gun into your mouth is another 50/50 thing. The kickback could cause you to miss your target. Then you'll end up a veggie because the bullet is lodged in your brain somewhere.

Better be able to apply some force to get that knife through your ribcage.

I've also seen that done, poor guy had hesitation marks all over his chest and four stabs to his heart. He ended up panicking and getting out of his truck to walk for help we assume, before falling down and dying.

Bottom line is it's very hard to overcome your own instinct for self preservation. You may find it hard to pull the trigger of a gun let alone stab yourself in the body.

Usually when the statement of gunshot to head is heard, it's referring aiming gun either at your forehead, or the temple.

I'm pretty sure I'd be able to pull the trigger without hesitation.. but I'd have only one shot to get the job done. and if I didn't aim right, I'd never be able to try again most likely(I'd be paralyzed or brain damaged)

Guns have a far better success rate than 50/50. Do your research folks. And it is a myth that recoil causes you to miss. Recoil is a result of the round being fired, it's cause and effect. What causes people to miss is flinching as they pull the trigger, most often the flinch is in anticipation of the recoil and this causes the user to pull the tip of the gun down and to the left if right handed, down and to the right if left handed. Experienced shooters can even pull shots off target by anticipating the recoil. The trick is to let the gun surprise you by going off. Now as to aiming, please read the available materials on this site.

This is not true either, you can slide a knife between ribs rather easily.

If you research this method you should be ok. A 9mm is an excellent choice.

thanks... I've also read on this site to use hollow point bullets.. I'm glad I saw that or I would have used regular target practice bullets(full metal jackets)

I plan to put the barrel in my mouth, and aim the gun about 30 degrees upward.

Very good. Yes, hollow point are designed to spread out in the body causing maximum damage, full metal jackets do mushroom but in general have one channel of damage.

I tried to copy and paste a thing from Google, but it wouldn't let me. But this is what it did let me copy.

The heart itself is hard to stab because it lays behind the sternum, is partially covered by the ribs, is totally covered by the tough connective tissue between the ribs and has it own fibrous covering the pericardium.

yeah, plus I read that the heart moves a bit from location to location... with my luck my heart would dart away from the knife, laughing at me as I continued to miss the target

In regards to the long gun/shotgun, mine is a Maverick 88 (for around $200), which has a 18.5 inch barrel, and overall length (with barrel) is about 38-39 inches in length. At average or slightly above average height, I can put the buttstock on the floor while sitting on a bed/chair and point the barrel in my mouth, close to the brainstem. Unless you are going for a really cheap handgun, like a Hi Point 9mm, then shotguns can be had for somewhere around $200-$300 and has a higher success rate than a handgun. Decent handguns do run anywhere between $350-$400, and sometimes even more if they are even better quality.

At any rate, since you know your situation the best, it is up to you to choose which method works best for your circumstances.

Here's a detailed way to do it, but I think it would be hard to do to yourself.

To strike the heart itself, the surest location to strike is between the fourth and fifth ribs (counting top down) on the left side of the victim with the knife angled such that the tip points to the victims right. This path will plunge the knife into the left ventricle, the largest chamber of the heart and the one with the greatest pressure. This is source of the traditional limit of a a four inch length for pen knives and other working knives that people used to routinely carry. It's hard to strike the heart or other vital region with a small blade under four inches long. (Although, they can be used for premidated attacks from behind, especially slitting throats but so can a paperclip.)

this really sucks so bad.. I can't take living anymore, but I don't want to end up making things 1000 times worse.
To make a synopsis of what's already here, and assuming you have decided your preferred method is either with a handgun or a knife:

1) Using a handgun aimed at your head has about 97% success rate. "At your head" includes mouth, temple, behind ear --your entire head. I suspect the only reason this figure is not 100% is because "to the head" includes aiming at the temple, which has a (relatively) high failure rate. Aiming into the mouth has a very high success rate.

2) A 9mm is plenty powerful enough, especially if you're using hollowpoint ammunition.

3) Exsanguination --cutting your wrists, neck veins, even femoral or brachial arteries, has a very low chance of success and would be very painful.

4) Likewise stabbing yourself in your heart isn't very effective --it has a fantastic dramatic value if you want to make a statement to your unfaithful spouse, but it otherwise has little to recommend it.

5) When using a handgun, be careful about your aim, in your mouth. Have a look at the diagrams in the gun megathread, and then practice your aim in the mirror. In my opinion, you would do better to aim too low than too high: if you miss the brainstem (your priority target) you would do better to hit the spinal cord beneath it than the less-important brain above it.

Conclusion: a 9mm handgun aimed into your mouth is a very reliable method and the best of the options you have chosen to explore.
