Does anyone have experience with risperidone? I've been on it for only a week so far. My doc prescribed it for sleep-maintenance insomnia (difficulty getting back to sleep). I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder with moderate recurrent anxiety and avoidant personality disorder. I'd fall asleep easily but would wake up, at worst, only one hour after falling asleep. It helped so far and I've been able to maintain sleep for much of the night. My worry though is that I will grow dependent. Does anyone have experience with this drug? Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

You won't grow dependent. As far as I know, it's used for aggresive young autists, patients who have problems with insanity and elderly who have dementia and are aggressive. It slows you down. I hear for the first time that it's being given to people with sleeping problems, but then I am no doctor. You might get some side-effects and depending on the dosage, you can't just stop taking them, you have to slowly lower the dosage (as with many other psychiatric drugs).

Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic. This class of medication is generally not considered addictive. But you can grow some tolerance towards it after long term use, so its effectiveness will decrease. Never take more than the prescribed dosage and to avoid withdrawal symptoms it should be discontinued slowly. Always listen to your doctor and raise concerns/side effects with them.

I have been on it for over a year and like it is stated above, come off of it gradually. I have tried to quit the drug and the withdrawals are a bitch. While it is not addictive per say, such as having to have it. You will find the withdrawal symptoms awful.

I was on the drug for a month and it destroyed my body. My hormones are off and my prolactin levels are sky high. I can't sleep at night and I'm constantly feeling like I can't sit still. I would recommend getting off the drug as soon as possible.

I'm on Risperdone for hallucinations and I find it very helpful.
No side-effects but I might have to come off it as my hormone levels have also been raised by it

Just remember, like with any drug, your tolerance and effects may vary from person to person. Best thing to do is to discuss it with your provider and act accordingly.

I was first diagnosed with MDD on early 2016, and although my antidepressant changes few times, risperidone was the only thing I keep taking for few years until I come off meds on Dec 2018. I was only given a low dosage and suppose to take it together with antidepressant. I remembered I was given Abilify at first because I dont seem to react with antidepressant alone, and showing progress when Abilify added. Unfortunately it was expensive and when I change to state-owned insurance kinda thing to get my meds, they dont cover Abilify so I was given Risperidone instead. I don't really remember if I'm seeing progress while taking them, compared to Abilify, but I really dont react with antidepressant alone so I keep taking them nonetheless. I must agree with others that the withdrawal symptomps were kinda crazy if stop abruptly.

I was on it for 3 weeks, and ended up with vertigo—extreme dizziness due to medication induced changes in my inner ear—but this is an unusual known side effect only experienced by women over 50 who take Rispiridone, so likely not a problem for most people.

Was put on it along with seroquel and tegretol. It was an absolute physical nightmare being put on three antipsychotics at once with no experience whatsoever with any form of psychiatric medication (aside from- very minimal- recreational use of adderall). These drugs in combination actually caused me to enter an unwavering psychosis, whereas upon being initially forced into psychiatric care, I was only suffering trauma-induced mania. It was horrible, they released me from the hospital with no instruction or guidance whatsoever when these drugs actually caused me to become a danger to myself and others. I wish I could have had the resources to seek legal counsel on this at the time. I ended up getting in my car and consciously running through red lights because I believed a higher power wanted me to. Needless to say, I got in a pretty bad accident.

I don't have any experience with risperdone alone.

For me, the withdrawal was like having my skin crawl while feeling like I have the chills and heat wash over my body at the same time. My temper got extremely short and being intolerable to my family. It basically sucks the big one. Your symptoms could be very different from me. Like I posted before, consultation with your provider is the best way to go.

It messed with hormone levels in the same way other people have described, so I couldn't stay on it long enough to tell if it did anything @_@ Get a blood test if you notice anything weird.

Potential bonus: risperidone is listed in Stans SN guide as one of the antipsychotics that also acts as an antiemetic!

I was put on risperidone as a kid. I felt tired, slowed down, and apathetic. Or maybe that was just my PTSD/bipolar depression making me feel that way. Either way it didnt do much for me.

my mate said it was the worst weeks of his life on it, he switched to seroquel and it worked wonders for him. Ironically there used to be an amazing drug prescribed for insomnia that actually worked.... maybe you've heard of it? its called nembutal.

Jesus christ, psychiatrists really are the most vile cunting people out there i wish people would stop respecting it as a field, i had a one try to put me on seroquel and zoloft after meeting me for 1 hr, they are clueless and dangerous and evade all responsibility if you go wrong.

Horrible teeth grinding. I chipped my front tooth, cuts on my tongue and cheeks. Felt like my head was turned into a cloud. Restlessness...like I had to walk around and fidget. Sleeping required additional medication.

Anger that this was just medicalized torture and I had no say in my healthcare. Distain for socialism.

I had an psychotic episode about two years ago and I was prescribed Risperidon and the side effects have fucked up my life, I worked in an office for over 35 years cleaned shaved, suited and booted and now I haven't got the energy to wash in the morning.

I have been clean of all medication for over well over a year now and nothing has changed, can't believe a fucking psychiatrist gave me this shit and never told me about the side effects, they should issue these dangerous psychotic pills for a 3 month period only and then wait to see if the symptoms return, not leave me on them unsupervised I didn't have a clue but now I have researched them thoroughly, I know they have dangerous side effects.

The reason they don't tell you is they are in denial I have told them hundreds of times, it has made me brain damaged and they won't accept it, you always get the same dumb answer, oh some people have some side effects but everyone is different and not everyone will experience them.

I was on 2mg which they say is a low dose 6 months later the side effects starting kicking in I was in Antigua and I suddenly started waking up after 4 hours sleep and then that was that I loved my sleep my eyes would just open automatically strange they prescribe it for in insomnia because that is one of the side effects listed, I started to feel strange and started to withdraw from people and didn't talk as much and then I started to feel really tired I couldn't work it out I always had a spring in my step so I was told by my work to take 3 months paid leave not sickness and then I couldn't move something just switched off in my brain or I am brain damaged I talked to the psychiatrist who advised me to stay on it after talking to him for months I made the decision myself to reduce it to 1mg and a few months later I just stopped on my own, I still have no energy it's about 14 month later I have not had an aspirin in that time, I can't think properly, I can't sleep properly, after I stopped I get ringing in my ears and this is on and off all day, I get out of bed I walk 10ft to the settee and watch TV I don't want to wash or shave or even brush my teeth even the simple tasks are an up hill battle. I have never taken medication in my life but I was still never warned of any side effects and left unsupervised. THESE DRUGS ARE EVIL.

My job had me on full pay for over 6 months in there contract you get paid for 3 months they was really gutted I couldn't return so that's why I'm on SS and want to CTB.

Cheers

Geo
