Canada may be the next country to approve medical assisted death for mental illness. I was reading an article about this and someones opinion was "Just because someone wants to die does not mean they have the right to." I can understand this only in the case of criminals trying to escape prison, but for literally anyone else this is ridiculous to believe. I guess people really are lost in their own worlds. No point to this post other than I hope Canada is able to move forward with MAiD for the mentally ill and suffering. At some point even psych workers have to wake up and be aware not all of their patients are treatable and their lives are pure hell and torment.

But in this case people will be divided into "not too sick to die" or "ideal to die". What to do with people who messed up so much in their lives with their mental illness but cannot die because they are rendered too healthy?

Yep, just because someone wants to die does not mean they have right to, they must suffer and pay taxes as slaves. That's why people call crisis lines.

But it's a very, very slippery slope. MAID organizations are quite literally deciding who has a life worth living and who does not. Right now the appeal to die begins with the patient, but that may not always be the case.

I do feel like this is somewhat a factor of my age. I have seen things that no one could possibly envision in my lifetime. I have seen that what begins as a help can become a horrific experience faster than anyone can imagine.

Maybe I'm just having an off day, but I don't think this is great news. I view it as another state control over our self-determination.

Yes maybe. Who knows if it would become a method of extermination, but I like to think it would be used for benevolence and that the guidelines would work. But who knows humans usually always find the worse way to use something so you may be right.

It's like saying just because someone wants to work for a living doesn't mean they have the right to.

If we approach the problem regarding the placement of mankind in a natural order of things subjected to the natural laws, then i'd say that everyone has the right to die, just as everyone as the right to cut their hair or trim their beard or nails. Causing death to a body is something that results from the laws of nature. Unlike getting married, which is something that we created with our own laws (every country has a set of laws that form a system), death is a reality that emanates from the laws of nature, just like the growth of a flower or the rise of the sun in the morning.
Forbidding suicide or homicides or whatever crime is something that can be done in social orders but it can never be done in the natural order, unless some sort of supernatural being makes it impossible for humans to kill themselves.
So yeah everyone has the right to die, whether our laws recognize that right or not it's irrelevant in the "bigger picture of the universe".

It's your life....how many times have we heard that before? Well, then it should be our choice to live or die plain and simple, no bullshit or shit filled patronizing. Canada is a bit of a shit hole so I'm not sure Trudeau has any balls in the first place to pull this off which is sad because I could use this death by a dr considering a dr nearly killed me and ruined my life
Peace/hugs

As Terry Pratchett once said
"if I knew that I could die at any time I wanted, then suddenly every day would be as precious as a million pounds. If I knew that I could die, I would live. My life, my death, my choice"
I know he said this after discovering he had an incurable disease but this small quote says everything I feel about having a choice.
