Is drowning a painful way to die?

Yes it would. And panic inducing. But soon after you aspire water you will start to feel "peace and euphoric calm" as you drift off to your death. Based on how many others described it.

One person i met who attempted suicide by drowning but was pulled out after a few minutes, said he will do it again the same way. But with nobody around him. He apparently found it peaceful.

But cant speak for everyone

I also heard it can be quite euphoric once you get past the initial need for air ofc and start breathing water. I have SN but I considered drowning before.

To add, if you manage blackout before you panic, or before touching water, it could be completely painless. Many ppl attempt shallow water blackout for that reason. Or drugs

I watched an episode of Bondi Rescue in which a suicidal woman entered the ocean after consuming a lot of alcohol. It's funny, because I have considered doing the same thing. She was even the same age as I am! She didn't end up dying.

Afterwards, they interviewed one of the lifeguards who said "I hope in 1 month or 6 months she comes back and says 'my life is going great now'". It showed how the mentally healthy have no idea how unremitting mental illness is.
