Hi everyone. So there are three options. Try to take your time with this. Read the options and really think about it. Try to pick the one that weighs the heaviest on your reason for being suicidal. Only use 3 if you have to.

1. Genetic/Nature - Choose genetic if you were raised in a healthy, loving home, but for some odd reason your still suicidal. Something internal as the causative factor.
2. Environmental/Nurture - Choose this if you love yourself, but circumstance has fucked up your life beyond repair. This could be due to finances, abuse, bullying, or illness. Something external as the causative factor.
3. 50/50 Only pick 50/50 if you can't tell whether it's genetic or environmental or it is 50/50.
4. I am suicidal because my time is up here on earth. Only pick this if your at least over 50, but preferably 60+.
5. I am suicidal because I made a lot of bad decisions in my life.

I debated myself if I should have added 4 - 5. Because really 4 could be a part of 2 and 5 could be a part of 1 depending on how one interprets the data and the question. So if you want to you couple those together to narrow the data set. It really just depends on if you believe in free will for number 5 and if you believe that aging is a disease that needs to be cured with technology for number 4.

Anyway I hope you like this poll.

Edit: And if your like me and you just want insurance for your dignity but don't want to end your life anytime soon then you are are rare person. If that is the case then just choose the option that brought you to that point as most people don't reach that point just through logical reasonable deductions and calculations.

I truly do hate myself and i've been raised in a fairly toxic household. Not sure what option to choose. Well i think option 1 is still the closest, as i'm not sure if my upbringing really was the problem.

Yeah see in your case it seems that mental illness runs in the family. So yes that would be genetics.

2, but I certainly do not love myself. The rest fits though, so it has to be that over any of the other "options".

Research or curiosity George?

Curiosity, but also for your sake as I am sure some of you probably have not thought about this too much.

Suicide runs in my family, but so do fucked-up childhoods and lousy upbringings. It's very hard to tell which is the cause and which is the effect.

Either way, I'm one of the Undepressed But Suicidal who wants insurance for when my illness gets in the way too much. (I used to be depressed, but got out of it.)

So @GeorgeJL my dear, what's my diagnosis?

# 3. Things could've been OK. My childhood wasn't the best but it was OK. A lot of things that happened back then messed me up and made me want to ctb before I was a teenager. It was everything that happened after I turned 18 that pretty much guaranteed me a shit life and my main reason for wanting to do it.

I think genetic for me. I had a happy childhood until I developed mental illness at 13. It runs in my family.

I think self-hate is often a natural result of being raised in a toxic household though.
It takes an iron constitution to resist it.
#2 for me and I don't care if it makes me seem a little egotistical. It takes a bit of excessive self-love to stand up to all the things in this world that want to crush you, without becoming those things in the process. I only hate myself for being born, and not taking better care of my mom/stepdad. Other than that, I like me fine (but I admit, I am the only person on the planet who does, as others remind me at every possible opportunity. meh).

My early environment was bad. I was one of those kids where if the environment had been good I think I might have turned out ok. But there are kids who turn out fine even from terrible environments. Then the third group turn out bad no matter if the environment was good. As a result of trauma and zero guidance, low parental investment, I turned out to be a disaster. What I mean by bad is that I grew up to behave and act in ways that do not serve me in my adulthood.

Well, it's between 3 and 5 for me. I had an environment that was the best my parents could provide, but they still had their problems. However, I guess it's on me for letting that affect me since by the time our family went downhill, I was old enough to be able to tune it out, but I didn't. I've also made decisions that have ruined my life just because I didn't want to be anything that my parents wanted me to be, in a blindly stupid rebellious streak.

I've been depressed since puberty, mental illnesses run in both sides of my family. I've been suicidal before, circumstances of loss and abuse triggered it along with my mental illness. Since I lost my son last year the cloud hasn't lifted and I'm not sure how much longer I can hang on.

I would say number 3.

My question for you as I am curious, did your parents use corporal punishment when you were younger? Why do you think that you were rebellious? What caused that rebellious streak?

Nah, I wasn't really hit as a kid. On the whole, my life was fine until around the time I was 10, which was when the family started to fracture. I'd spent pretty much my entire life trying to please my parents and I didn't want to do that anymore. Because of that and my dad's troubles with his job (he works in a dying industry in a senior position that doesn't have many vacancies), the relationship between the three of us has only gotten worse over the past 10 years.

It's kinda difficult to know what you want to do with your life when you have anhedonia. I wonder if I would have been better off if I'd managed to suck it up and be the kid my parents wanted me to be.

It's a 3 for me. I've had some bad things happen to me in my teen years, studies have shown that 60% of people in similar situations consider suicide.

I have always been a neurotic person though and suffered from severe anxiety and OCD since my early childhood. I think that genetic factor will be the reason behind making me one of the people who succeed in committing suicide.

I don't hate myself, but I do hate the world I'm in. I never chose to be a part of it, yet I'm expected to be a part of it. Fuck survival. This is bullshit. I need to peace the fuck out.

I also need to teach people who think that I have a "temporary problem" a lesson.

I stopped living life to the fullest after a lot of bad decisions - Hello there Cannabis and Benzo addiction - but even this was tolerable enough to make suicide only an utopic fantasy. What completely fucked me beyond repair is an unknown, unspottable illness in my reproductive system.

In short, my testicles gradually stop functioning. I wished to have children one day who could do better than me. I wished to make my girlfriend happier than I am. I wished to finally improve enough to put on a real smile. I was on a good track before that and now all hope is gone. I don't feel emotions anymore (except terrifying existential angst), I have NO motivation for life and only make others feel bad.

Mediating between #2 and #3 because I can't say if I was fucked-up in devise or as an infant. And if I hadn't love for myself, I wouldn't think of suicide in the first place.

Good question. I think some degree of (unintentional) emotional abuse and (intentional) physical abuse from my dad definitely does contribute to my suicidality. However, I think I'd still be suicidal without it. The core of my problem is ME. The environment is just an aggravating factor.

I've never been a particularly optimistic or happy person but I'd have to go with #5 (it's more like 20%, 80%). I messed up a lot of things, and had some bad luck but I have to accept personal responsibly all things considered. I think about this frequently and how I'm never getting back the time. Reminds me "The saddest words among mice and men are: what might've been".

#5. Wasnt dealt the perfect hand, but most people arent. I could have done a lot better instead of letting a slightly bad hand turn into something much much worse. But then I sometimes ask myself if that was the only thing happening because I think I've always had "mental" issues of some sort as far back as I can remember.

Great poll. The options are succinct and sensibly exclude any melodrama that may be present in many like it. Straight to the point. I like it.
