I'm curious how depression impacts your sleep.

I actually can't sleep most nights. For whatever reason, being depressed doesn't make me sleepy or lethargic usually.

There are times when depression makes me want to sleep all the time, just can't seem to get out of bed. And there are times when I hit the depression-insomnia cycle, those are the worst. It's a very vicious cycle that drives me crazy, I'm so tired and yet I can't sleep, my emotions are like falling into this bottomless pit.

8-10h right now, but when I'm deep down I can spend 14-16h in bed without problem, I don't even need meds, it's like I'm constantly exhausted

I usually am up late in the night all the time ( 3-4 am) as part of events/people avoidance so it depends on if I have a reason to wake up early (like exams) in which case I sleep less than 3hours and spend time blankly phasing out. If I don't because it's week-end or holidays, I can enter an hibernation cycle where I close all the light off my room, stop eating and can spend up to 18-20 hours "sleeping" and the rest in my bed staring at my phone. Those last anytime between 2 and 8 days. So... "variable" ?

This is me right now.

It's hard to say how much sleep I actually get. What basically happens is I am awake until my body can't take it anymore and I pass out, but then I have violent nightmares that wake me up every hour or two. And that drags on all day until I hit the wake cycle again. It really sucks.

I'm constantly switching without any reason between what seems like insomnia and hypersomnia, one night/day I will sleep for 4 hours but the next one for 14h, very rarely I manage to pull off the "healthy ~8 hours of sleep".
I used to blame my fucked sleep schedule - sleeping during daytime and being awake during the night but once I fixed that absolutely nothing changed so now I'm back to sleeping during the day because at least it lets me avoid the 25+°C heat.

Last year it was 0-4 hours every night and after 6 months of that, I was not able to function. This year I have gone the total opposite and sleep around 8-10 hours yet feel more drained than ever. I dont get it at all. I cant find a reasonable explanation.

To be honest, I normally get 10-12 hours of sleep, but lately I either sleep 12+ hours a night, or I can't get to sleep at all. It sucks :(

I sleep well because I'm on antipsychotics (Olanzapine) which has a sedative side effect. Can't let to sleep without antipsychotics though. Also it gives me vivid dreams.

I never sleep through the night anymore. I have tried every kind of med and regular doctor is frustrated and sending me to a sleep specialist.
Sleep used to be o.k. for me and was the only time my mind would shut off and I could escape. Cc
Nothing will knock me out in order to sleep through a whole night. I am beyond frustrated.

I am lucky if I get 5 to 10 hours sleep a week. Your mind does very odd things with the lack of sleep i here things i see things to all so i cam smell things that aren't they. All so I have wakeing dreams to and sum are bad ones. Sum days its hard to tell if i am awake or sleeping.

Normally, I sleep between 6-8 hours, but somedays I run on less than 4 hours of sleep depending on the night before and whether I have something I need to do early in the morning. When I'm sleep deprived, I do become a bit sluggish in my motor functions and what not and have to really fight to stay awake. Sometimes I go into micronaps during the day as the day goes on.

I either barely sleep or take a med that puts me out but I have these horrible nightmares that I have to go on other forums about it. Or I get sleep paralysis - one of the scariest mental health experiences I've had. It used to work great, now it's giving me symptoms it's supposed to treat. I need to talk to my doctor soon. It is one more reason to leave gracefully.

To be honest i have a hard time telling.
The truth is i don't have control over my sleep.
I can't make my body sleep more when i want and i have a hard time resisting urges to sleep when i'm home.
It's like it's not me choosing when to or not to sleep.
But i would say i'm around the 7h per day, not discounting the usual interruptions with birds chirping or tge noises my family members make when they wake up before me.

I have not slept like a normal person for a few years now. I have tried everything. So, now my doctor is sending me to a sleep specialist.

Sleeping & waking up are the primarily reasons why I'm a NEET now. When I was a working person, I'd wake up and feel terrible for around 3 hours upon waking up, and just fatigued in general. Now as a NEET I feel horribly fatigued, but at least I don't have to "battle" myself in order to wake up.

It's depends, friday I discovered that the girl I liked and never want to talk to me again, during my period of severe depression, moves from work, house, did many courses and now probably are dated someone... That day I didn't sleep. I just cried all night planning my death.

0-4 hours, I just did 42 hours of no sleep over the weekend, and when I finally decided to go to bed, I slept 2 hours and was wide awake. Fuck me..... I can't fucking win.
