I would think that yes, such a rope would be fine in respect to holding weight. What I don't know is whether the diameter of a rope or the material the rope is made of would make a huge difference when it comes to comfort level. I know some cases where the individual was successful using a belt or even a dog leash. I would refer you to the megathread, which I think I'll read now myself as there are so many questions about this method. Personally I hate things around my neck.

that's a good rope. here's a canada rope store I've been stalking. you can order their stuff by the foot(often for less than 50 cents per foot), and the different types of rope are v clearly described in their characteristics. i'll put down their link to their glitter cotton rope
