I've been out of work since 3/22/2024. Since 10/2021, I've struggled to pay my rent because of two bouts of joblessness. In each case, I was unable to get unemployment. I've been on P/A for over a year now. I owe the landlord 13 k. He informed me that he would be taking me to court for unpaid rent. Even though I basically had no income, I still paid a portion of my rent every month. I might be able to get some kind of rental assistance but I don't think I can do this on my own. My soul has been shattered. Ironically enough, I've always feared that I would eventually be homeless. Even if I get a job, how can I explain my need to take time off to go to court? I am so paralized with fear and anger that I can't function. I swear, if I had had a full bottle of Phenobarbital to go with my Lamictal, I wouldn't be hear now.

I really don't want to kill myself, but I can't wind up in a shelter or couch surfing. I've suffered enough. I NEED something stable in my life.

I live in New York City. Ironically enough, I'm an out of work Social Worker. I've helped people get one shot deals and other assistance in the past. I've strugggled ever since I left a job as a DV shelter Housing Specialist in 2021. From 8/22/-3/24, I worked at an agency named Housing Works. They are one of the worst non-profits in the city. I had a caseload of predators who took advantange of my empathy and weaponized it against me. I will NEVER work with homeless substance abusers again. Assuming I'm still around by next year.

NYC is where most of my attempts occurred. I found the social workers in their to be savages. Yes nypd would save my life, but they're not much more then criminals was my opinion at the time. Of course I had lost perspective because of being suicidal, and I wasn't fun to be around either. I just wanted to be left alone to die. I was in the shelter system at the time. Went from 30th street to the fortress in Brooklyn, and finally back to Manhatten. So it's kinda like a self perpetually cycle in my opinion. Idk.

But at OP. Why not buy some camping gear then?

I am very sorry that you are going through these awful events. There may be a future moment in which this is all behind your back and things are structured they way you would like them to be. I wish there was something I could do to help you, but I don't see how (living in Bulgaria and currently unemployed (since February)).

Focusing on the practical side of the issue, if you make a list of alternatives or workarounds, how many possibilities can you think of? For instance, moving into a relatives' house temporarily? Is there a programme that would provide you with a room and a key, so you wouldn't be in a traditional shelter? Is there any job that would come with housing as part of the package? Any temporary solution while you catch your breath and find a more permanent solution to housing and unemployment? Also, have you discussed this with friends or family, with somebody you know truly cares about you? Pale_Rider suggested buying camping gear. A more comfortable and a safer temporary solution could be a caravan or a van (just as a better option than being absolutely homeless).

You've most probably gone through all this in your mind, but sometimes there are solutions that don't come to our minds straight away and that may be worth exploring. Sometimes talking to a friend or a relative could bring up some possibilities we haven't thought of initially.

Whatever happens, don't forget you have inherent value as a human being and that you deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, including by your own self. Also, as the Portuguese saying goes, no good lasts forever and no evil is endless. Lived in a car for 10 days in 2012. Seemed hopeless, but then things improved and we were able to rent proper housing again.

I had a very similar situation, but not in debt over 10,000 to my landlord and not quite as dire. I ended up leaving prior to being taken to eviction court and leaving the large city I was in and moving to a cheaper area while I still had some cash flow. It absolutely sucked because I was in such a cool area and I was in a place that had decent rent, it was LOW for the area and I still couldn't afford it. I am not sure if I made a mistake by leaving voluntarily. Probably. I have no evictions on my record but terrible credit now.

So, in your situation, you need to deal with the possibility you may be evicted: over 13,000 you may be able to delay things, but it's going to be hard. Evictions in NYC take an incredibly long time, but they do eventually sometimes happen. Over 10K is around the time landlords start going to court for evictions, usually landlords are patient prior to that. The good news is if you aren't in eviction court yet, it takes some time to process evictions if you fight them. Have you looked at free legal help in NY? It would help to know the borough. NY is so big that even with that it will not identify you at all.

Which borough are you in? What sort of jobs are you looking for? Will you take anything or are you only willing to take certain types of jobs? Are you willing to relocate?

If you want help/suggestions with looking for work, message me. Have you contacted NY organizations that help fight evictions?

I also think right now, you need to start looking at your options:

1) Getting a gym membership is the smartest thing you can do when possibly facing homelessness. You can always shower in a gym, shave or apply makeup, and look presentable.

2) Be prepared to get a second mailbox. When applying for work, you will need to list something, you'll need to have government records sent somewhere if applying for assistance.

3) Downsize what you can. You want to be able to fit the most important stuff into something you carry. That means if you have paperwork, you can photograph it, put it on an SD card, and back it up to Microsoft's OneDrive or something similar. Do you have a vehicle you can live in? I am guessing not, since if you are in the 5 boroughs then there's no need for a car.

4) If you can reach out to any family, if you have any family, reach out to them. If you have churches in your area, reach out to them. This isn't the time for being too proud to ask for help from others.

5) If this isn't a rent stabilized place, and you have family, you could just leave before the eviction is on your record, but it may be worth fighting the eviction.

6) Can you get a roommate?

There are a lot of different job sectors that have needs.

If you don't actually want to commit suicide, it will be really hard to do it. Survival instinct is a real phenomenon, people who genuinely absolutely 100 percent want to die with no reservations at all still sometimes are unable to die because of survival instinct. You should plan like you will be unable to commit suicide and not rely on suicide as a backup plan, because it often doesn't work.

I've helped people with resumes before and job searches previously. I am not a professional at that, but let me know if you want help. I may be useless... but perhaps not. This is something I've wanted to try, so if you want to be a test subject for me on helping people out on this, you'd actually be doing me a favor. Message me if you are considering it. I wouldn't charge anything. I know you don't have it.

I have one option. There is a program for people at risk of eviction. If I get all of the necessary documentationo together, I could qualify for a one shot deal. I have spent all afternoon in front of my computer just trying to get away from the fear, hopelessness and anger. As soon as I got off Youtube and checked the clock, the feelings returned. What I need is an ICM case worker to guide me through all this like a child. Stress and trauma don't help my cognitive capabilities.

Just do your best to get the documentation together. You can use the pomodoro method if you want to help you with pacing things.

Again, if you want help with looking for work, just send me a message. I'm often around here. The risk is I would have to know your name to apply to stuff and I could be some sort of pro-lifer or bad person trying to get your information. I'm not, but I suppose you can't know that. You can read my prior posts if you want and conclude whether I am larping and have malevolent intents or am actually here because I am generally depressed and thinking about ending it.

I recently worked with a non-profit in the bronx as an administrative assistant in a drop-in center. they have frequent job openings and take referalls. the drop-in center is also open 24/7 and has free ammenities that you may benefit from. theres many positions available at different locations (some better than others) however, they are all located in the bronx.

i am also looking for work right now, albeit not as desperately- through another program that helps individuals with physical/mental disabilites find jobs and support that suit them. you might also be interested in this.

i am happy to share the links to these sources if you have not already heard of them. please dm me if you are interested!
