There are so many myths surrounding use of raw/crude opium, and all of it is, respectfully, pure unadulterated bunko. At best, constipation ensues. It is the synthetic alkaloids (heroin, morphine) that kill, not opium in its pure form. Dying of an opium "overdose" is akin to dying from marijuana. It just is'nt going to happen. Three cheers for the pipe!

People have definitely overdosed on poppy seed tea and died. It's why you can't get the raw dried pods on auction sites like you used to be able to. People died, and then the site came in and shut it all down.

Morphine is not synthetic. It makes up the largest part of opium. You can definitely overdose on opium, although dying from smoking is extremely difficult or next to impossible because you will nod off or fall unconscious before being able to smoke a lethal amount. The morphine is potentiated by a huge amount because of the contained narcein. Opium is a true gift of nature and probably no pharmaceutical opiate can match it. It's components are extremely synergistic.

You would love it—-pure peace and I kind of paradoxical mental stimulation that is wonderful for creative thinking. Even the taste is extraordinary—-floral, nectar-like notes predominate. Interestingly, the Chinese typically referred to it as "the key to longevity" in that it strengthens the immune system. Opium smokers rarely get ill and are typically resistant to colds, flu, etc. three cheers for the pipe! I have grown it several times with great success. Not just any species of poppy will do; palaver somniferum is the only opium yielding species. I prefer Chinese white and Vietnamese blue.

Yes, it truly is a gift, is'nt it? So easy to grow as well. One of my personal favorites is papaver gigantism; it's pods are as big as baseballs.
