I see postings lately where people have discussions about possibly leaving notes, and comments discussing who will find the body, including rate of decomposition under certain conditions, etc.

I have an option to share that I think is a good one. There's an app called Boomerang for Gmail that allows you to schedule email on a delay; you choose when it's sent out. A few hours, next day, next week, whatever.

Want to tell your landlord to have law enforcement do a wellness check? Say your final goodbyes? Send a very delayed email to tell a loved one not to be sad, you're not in pain anymore?

Maybe you want to send a series of delayed emails to someone who made your life a living hell, to let them know that you're haunting them and vengeance will be yours from beyond the grave. You do you, and I say rock on, be the malevolent spectre you were meant to be.

Boomerang takes a second to set up, and it has some practical everyday applications: my favorite is you can see who's read the email and how many times.

Change of heart? Circumstances didn't turn out as planned? There's an option to easily cancel, and the email isn't sent. You can always save it if you want to send it again at a later time.

Lemme know whatcha think.

I actually have Boomerang and so far it looks good. However, I am a bit skeptical that there may be like glitches (email sending too early w/o actually confirmed) or something like TimeCave (timecrap I shall call it) where someone a while back posted that his email was intercepted by the people who operate the TimeCave servers and what not and LE was called to his home/residence. I don't know if Boomerang has this vulnerability and I'd rather not risk it myself. I don't want to dissuade anyone here but do consider all the risks and decide accordingly.

Hmm. Good point; I can't vouch for the service's accuracy myself. Maybe set up another email account to use for some test runs, and see how it does.

I'm the one who had TimeCave send my "please come get my corpse" email to LE after I had deleted it. Warning others here about that possibility was what inspired me to stop lurking and start posting --my warning was my first post.

That incident may have been because I couldn't be sure TimeCave had actually deleted the email properly (I failed my attempt, so deleted the email) and contacted them to make sure it had been deleted, but I still find it disturbing that 1) a supposedly deleted email was still on their server, and 2) they would then read that email, and 3) that they would then send it along to LE. They might not have checked had I not drawn their attention to it, but I still find their subsequent actions troubling.

I have since shifted to LetterMeLater, which provides the same email delay service --with a much better user interface-- but I don't know whether they wouldn't do the same thing. I did use them for a subsequent "come get my corpse" email, and after I failed that attempt also, their better user interface made me confident the email had, in fact, been cancelled. And LE did not show up, which is reassuring.

I don't use Google unless there's no other option --I don't trust Google-The-All-Seeing, especially since they make no secret about scanning the content of emails-- so Boomerang isn't an option for me.

There is also Dead Man's Switch, which takes a different approach: you set an email to send unless you cancel the send order. So after a set period of time, during which you have not contacted the website, your email will be sent. Do nothing, and your note will be delivered.

Well, shit. Way to let us down, electronic communication. Very important stuff to keep in mind! I'll look at Dead Man's Switch. Thanks, Somnolent Equine!

I think this will be my go to delayed email service, if I decide to send my note via electronics.

Boomerang is a great resource. I have used it many times.

I always preferred hand-written letters. I've collected several in the past year. Eventually, I just let the person read them, since I'm clearly still here.

You're welcome --and sorry for the bad news about the lack of security with electronic communication. I was pretty bummed, myself.

I've thought of doing this to share the location i will be after ctb. But decided not to do it. It looks like I cared to much about my own death. Atm I prefer going away without any sign whatsoever. Then i can't do anything that will be misinterpreted.

Thanks for the interesting and informative discussion everyone. I have been thinking about this too - there are people I will want to contact, but certainly don't want to send a bunch of mail and then realise that I'm not ready to CTB, or I have to delay because of extenuating circumstances etc. I have sympathy for the person that has to find me, so I'd rather somehow contact the cops/ambulance and tell them where I am, what they will find, and to not send a kid straight out of the academy. Rather than have a close friend find me or just some random person who passes by

I might just leave a note with a few final thoughts. Probably just going to write something like "Sorry mum and dad - I know I'm your whole world but I can't do this anymore. I hope that you forgive me."

I'll probably use something like this to make sure my body is found before it decomposes (I live by myself) badly, but I plan on hand-writing a bunch of letters to people and putting them on my side table so they're more personalized. Un-sealed envelopes of course since the police will open them anyway.

Very nice idea, I didn't know you'd posted this since I'm new. I had posted a similar post as your's although nowhere as close the detail that you've provided..

I've used boomerang for some time and, the send it later function in Thunderbird for years. And a post mortem video can be shared using the SHARE function in dropbox + boomerang.

If you have microsoft outlook it has a delay send capability built in. I have tested it and it works

When I click Compose in Gmail in the pc webbrowser interface there is now a little drop-down arrow so that you can 'Schedule send' the message. I tested it and it works. I guess this is a new standard feature?
Still dead mans switch sounds like a better option and certainly more appropriately named.
