Is there here who has overdosed on nortriptyline (or any other tricyclic antidepressants) and survived? I think I'm going to attempt it tonight but I'm worried I'll be found and want to know what people have gone through in that situation. I've read all sorts of directions for how to do it and scientific literature on what happens in the body - but I'm appealing to a much more basic level. Is it terribly scary, especially for those around you? Is it painful? Are you likely to have long-term effects but survive?

I read a recent post about someone who ODed on one of the tricyclic antidepressants, but I went back through quite a lot of the site (and have been lurking here for a long time) and didn't find much information exactly like what I'm looking for. I also tried to search for any kind of site that collects stories of people who have ODed/had negative drug use experiences, but didn't have much luck there either.

I am very serious about my attempt - I have all the elements required and will be taking quite a high dose. It's just the time I am worried about. It's unlikely, but possible that my parents might come check on me and I would be several hours into the attempt - mostly I want to know what might happen then, or what they might see, whether I die or survive. Thanks, anyone.

Before joining this site, I had considered an overdose with another TCA which my doctor had prescribed for nerve pain. I had done my own research online reading about cases in medical journals. A TCA overdose is cardio-toxic. If you survive a TCA overdose, you will have serious heart damage for the rest of your life. You will also suffer brain damage. Please think things through and don't rush into anything. I don't want to see you end up with organ damage and end up in a worse situation. You shouldn't take an overdose if you think there is a chance someone will find you. Also a TCA overdose causes a prolonged heart attack. This is extremely painful.

In the sticky threads you have the PPH. One of the methods considered is the OD by amitriptyline. A dose of 10 grams must be considered, accompanied by benzos, antiemetics and alcohol.

Thanks for the reply - I have the other medications recommended by the PPH, which will hopefully allow me to be unconscious quickly and not feel any pain. I am not anticipating being interrupted, but wanted to know about the possibilities, should it happen.

I'm curious how far into the process someone has to be before there is serious, long-term damage done to their heart. Since the PPH says the entire process can take 24 hours, would a person found 6 hours in already have long-term damage? 12? etc? I would assume brain damage only happens after it has gotten to the point where the brain is lacking oxygen, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks, I've read it several times and am fully ready by PPH standards.

I had read that with a large TCA overdose, significant neurological and cardiac toxicity generally occur rapidly- usually within a few hours.
