New guy question about messaging people

Is starting a conversation the same thing as a private message here? I'm looking for a way to PM people, and it's confusing.

Yes. Nobody else can poke into your messages. I believe admins can access them if absolutely necessary, but they don't.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
