Essentially, government corruption in Nepal, like many Asian countries is not a new issue. Nepal ranks 34 for corruption on a scale of 0-100, 100 being zero/minimal corruption and 0 indicating very high levels. However, many, specifically the countries youth, have took to social media to voice their discontent and outrage with the current government and how many Nepali's are forced to move abroad to work due to lack of opportunity in the country, and how the taxes they pay are seemingly not being spent for the countries development while the children of politicians flaunt their wealth and weddings on social media (I will attach photos later, but forgive me as my data is quite slow)
In response to these virtual protests and callout posts, the government decided to roll out a social media ban under the guise of needing companies like meta and Google to "register themselves in Nepal" due to security concerns, when the reality is they want to punish Nepali citizens for speaking out and to forbid them from having easy access to their families working abroad.
In spite of this ban, many Nepalis have turned to protesting publicly, and on September 8th, 2025 during a peaceful protest in Kathmandu, authorities began shooting at the protesters killing an estimated 14-20 including those who were minors, and hundreds more are likely in a critical state of injury due to the shootings.
So far, the PM has resigned and the parliament was recently set on fire, and I've also read that they are trying to roll back(?) the ban but I'm not too confident on how that's going currently.
Anyways, I'm speaking on this here because a similar thing is occurring in the Philippines where a lot of my family is from and I want to show allyship to people in Nepal and I really hope that Filipinos could hopefully do something similar, but I'm also worried about the amount of people that could be potentially killed or things happening like people being silenced by social media getting banned for some stupid reason like "to protect morality" or "safety concerns."
