Some bacteria which live in our brains feed off various mental states and influence our brains to produce those mental states.
There are different strains of this bacteria around our brains, and they compete with one another. When they affect the brain in certain ways, the brain becomes a more conducive environment for them and they spread. The other strains likewise compete in order to so spread.
Personality is the dynamic equilibrium between these strains.
