I'm a college student living with my parents (please don't judge, I cannot afford student housing). My current plan is to ctb in a hotel (still trying to decide between a few methods). However, I will need to be able to have an excuse for staying away for the night without raising suspicion. This includes potentially on a school night. If I just go without saying where I'm going, my parents will try to contact me. If I don't reply or tell them where I am, they might freak out and call the police which could ruin my plans (my mom might be convinced that I was abducted or they might be worried about suicide. I haven't brought up suicide in years, but I have had a few failed attempts as teenager that they know about).

I could maybe say I'm staying over at a friend's house or something, but then they might wonder why I'm not doing homework instead. They know what courses I'm taking this semester and I have been put on academic probation before, so they'll probably want to make sure I'm doing homework. I don't know if maybe saying hey, I'm staying in a hotel for the night to eliminate distractions from homework would be a good excuse or not.

Why would anyone judge you? At least here in The Netherlands, it is completely normal to stay at your parent's home since housing is ridicilously expensive here.

Why can't you be semi-honest with your parents and tell them you need a break for a night? Tell them you just need some time and space for youself, and that you'll be back tomorrow. Ofcourse, you don't want to arise suspicion that you're going to CTB. Good luck!

Nobody's going to judge you here, don't worry.

Is there any way you could tell your parents you're staying at a friends, and you're both going to be studying and helping each other?

Honestly, I am skeptical of either of those two excuses, especially the stay at friends.
They could call the friends parents?
Do you have a cell phone?

Right now, I don't have anything better to offer, but I'm sitting here wracking my brain.
Is there any sort of event you could tie the excuse into?

If it's college they likely won't call parents

Do they know the courses syllubus? I would go with the knocking out homework/papers/focusing on your weakest courses. Let them know you are going to try this out and might make it a weekly or bi-weekly thing. If you put a timeline on things instead of a one time shot it tends to put people at ease. It is all up to how convincing you are.

Thanks for the other suggestions as well everyone. If I use the sleepover excuse, I'll be sure to choose a friend who my parents don't know the parents of.

The truth is, it's very unlikely the police would find you very quickly. If you really need to ctb, you'll have time. Just say you're studying late but you'll be back home later. Go directly to hotel, take public transportation or walk, don't drive if u have a car, pay cash, and leave ur cell at home. the maids will find you before the police.

I think this is a very good suggestion. Cars, credit cards, and cells are trackable. Without any of those, it would be pretty hard to hone in on your location soon enough to do anything.

So I'm thinking of either saying I'm going to be with a friend and we'll help each other with homework or I need a break, just some time to myself, so I'll stay in a hotel overnight. Both of those excuses would work well with my parents. But the other suggestions (leaving my phone behind, using cash to pay, etc), could work well for other people.

Also it doesn't have to be overnight. Most places allow you to check in as early as 3pm. You wouldn't even need to tell your parents you're staying overnight anywhere.

You could always just sneak out during the day and leave any devices they could track you with such as phones.

It will take them a while to figure out which hotel you're at especially if there's more than one at your location.

Do you have 24 hour libraries in your college? You could just say you have a big test coming up/assignment due and you'll stay at the library all night

Do hotels even let you pay in cash? Every time i've been to one they need a credit or debit card (incase you cause damage to the room or something)
