Headline: falls higher than 12 meters (40 feet), unless I am missing something, are an extremely reliable method. I think this is extremely important information. Jumping gets a lot of skepticism in suicidal communities, partially due to worries of being discovered (for certain locations) but also partially due to uncertainty about reliability. I've also seen posts expressing worry that getting drunk beforehand would soften impact too much,.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this study suggests that acceleration above 17m/s is extremely likely to result in death, regardless of how one lands or on what one lands: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/19930020462 This would mean jumps above 40 feet are reliable in any context (into water, while drunk, if u land on feet, etc).

Almost all studies show that it's very reliable yet I think the reason it goes under so much scrutiny is because of the side effects on the off chance you live, and the fact that it's very terrifying compared to other methods (at least in my opinion)

What's weird about that to me is that both of these criticisms also apply to gun, yet it doesn't seem to get as much scrutiny.

Thing is fatal does not always equal instant… Some years ago, I used to live in a tall building and my neighbor's cat fell off his balcony off of the 10th floor. The cat was still alive at the bottom and it was the worst thing I've ever seen. My neighbor hauled the cat to the vet about 30 mins away and later told me the cat was still alive when they got there. They had to put the cat down to end the suffering. Never in my life would I have thought that fall to be survivable. Now, I get it that a cat has a lot less weight than a human so it doesn't gain as much velocity falling, but still wtf. I would not want to be broken on a ground fully aware not even for a few seconds.
