So bad, it's almost laughable. If it wasn't so damn frustrating...

Yesterday I saw her. I described to her in detail my feelings of apathy and anhedonia. Her response? "I honestly have no idea why that's happening, but maybe you should think about joining a group or two online and ask some people for tips."

Not even joking.

I'm not one of those people who doesn't think therapy can help, but it sure is a lot of work sifting through all the bad.

Mine is pretty bad... he has a success story for every issue I raise...

Me: I hate everybody
Therapist: An old client named Anne hated everybody, and I made her challenge that belief and now she has several friends

Me: I can't get a job and want to kill myself
Therapist: An old client named John said he couldn't get a job and wanted to kill himself, and I made him challenge that belief and now he has a great job in finance

I wish he'd stop with the comparisons... I told him I'm not going to challenge any of my thoughts/behaviors they are far too ingrained at this point.

Maybe he should become a motivational speaker instead?

But seriously, that sucks. It would get old so fast. Not to mention, doesn't that kind of raise privacy concerns?

@k75
What would her reaction have been, if you had replied something along the lines: oh, don't worry, I got that covered. I get a great deal of advice from this amazing obline community... it's called... sanctioned suicide :-)

On a more serious note, it sounds like malpraxis, I wonder if she simply lacks experience or knowledge.

Are you planning on seeing her again?

@Astral316

I thought rule number 1 when going to therapy was that the therapist was not allowed to disclose any details to a third party.

It seems very unprofessional to use other patients as examples... I would feel violated if I found out my therapist passed on my stories.

You know, that is the exact thing that popped into my head at the time! I imagine the results would have been priceless.

She's very inexperienced. They told me she was new, and I thought that meant new to the clinic. But no... pretty sure she was quoting her textbooks our first session. But I also think she lacks what it takes to be a really good therapist in general.

I am currently shopping for a new one, but I have to see her again in the meantime. Hopefully I'll find someone better soon.

Oh my, it sounds like therapy with this therapist defeats the whole purpose of going there.

I hope you find a better one. I had both really bad and really good experiences with therapist. The best one was with a guy who was near retirement. I swear I sometimes felt a little lighter on my feet after a session with him. Too bad he doesn't practice anymore.

I fired my first therapist and the one I have now is awesome. Even thought I am still going to CTB, its nice that there is someone nice and supportive to talk to. Can you get someone else?

He switches up the names... he says "I had a client just like you, we'll call him (or her) [insert name here]."

That's honestly really stupid to do, pain is relative and each person is different, that's just low-key peer pressure without actually talking about your issues.
Comparisons like this can actually undermine others because it makes them feel less because "everyone but me is successful"
If all he does is challenge people, then he's only dealt with people who just have motivational issues and not any real, ingrained, genuinely broken people with severe problems I dare say. It also sounds like he has some insecurities and is trying to seed trust by showing off his "talents"

I hope you find someone else soon as well. Perhaps write a complaint? But I don't know if that will make others treat you differently in the future, health professionals sometimes back one another up even when they shouldn't.

Yeah the comparing must be great for breaking the last crumbs of self-esteem you have. That was my father's refrain when I was a kid: Other kids are strong, they are never sick. Other kids don't cry. Other kids this other kids that. It has not got to me in the long run, but nobody needs hear that from their therapist.

Absolutely terrible, you deserve to have you're voice heard, and you're thoughts, feelings and emotions GENUINLY understood and heard by SOMEONE WILLING AND WANTING TO HEAR AND UNDERSTAND THEM. not someone, who doesn't give 10 shits, and further invalidates you're feelings. It's pathetic.

I'd literally get up, walk out the door and find a new therapist. Even talk to someone about them, imagine how there making others feel whom are similar to being in a position such as yourself? So fucking sad. i hope you find someone much better.
