I attempted suicide in January this year and almost left the world. Since then, my mother has given me ideas of making a funeral plan for me, her and my father. Here we pay a small monthly fee and are entitled to some services through this plan, such as getting a wheelchair in an emergency, among other equipment. In the event of death, the plan covers all body preparation, the funeral and burial. She claims that it is good to be safe in the event of unforeseen events, and that dying is natural, and we must always be prepared for death, because it comes sooner or later.

Interestingly, she has never talked about it before, she first started talking about this subject only after my last suicide attempt. Is she, at heart, already reasonably prepared for my death? To me it seems so.

Careful, most plans won't pay out with suicidal cases.

Hmm, I have my doubts too.
I don't worry about that much. The biggest question is what is between the lines of her suggestions.
Think who will benefit in the end.

To pay out you have to have paid into the policy for 2 years. Most things are not covered like suicide and act of god! Some do cover Suicide but the majority do not. I have a plan so does my sis and brother in law. Funerals are expensive even £2800 for the basic one.

What do you mean?
@Rachel74 , any thought?
It's also responsible to have these things in place. Is this just to pay for a funeral or does it include life insurance too?

You will collect when you die from this insurance?
This plan only covers body handling, funeral and burial. No one gets any money.
The funeral plan I'm talking about here doesn't include collecting. They don't give the family money to the funeral. They only do the services after death. That's why I though @JimFord99 question so strange.

Are you sure as most life insurance policies contain a plan after you die and pays for your funeral.

It's not a life insurance, only a funeral plan.

If, for example, I die in another city, I cannot be buried there through this plan, I would have to pay it out of my pocket. It only works at a municipal level. My body needs to come here so that I can have all the preparation and burial without having to spend money.

I think she's being very practical by hoping for the best but realising there may be a worst. Unless she's had to arrange funerals for other members of the family before, it's possible your attempt has made her think about how she'd deal with it.

There are some practicalities to it which I can admire. If there's a waiting period then it might make you hold on until the plan can kick in. If you're going to do it and be successful then you'll probably do it before she's paid the full amount so she can save herself some money and stress (can you or her actually afford a funeral? they don't come cheap) and this way you get to specify what you want - this is a biggie because if your family doesn't usually speak about these things then there's no way of knowing what someone wants when the time comes.

I'd like everyone to be so sensible - most people don't make wills or tell people what they want for their funeral as they're scared of death, which means when it happens the survivors have to make decisions during a time of great stress and are at the mercy of funeral homes upselling and increasing the cost.

Yes, it was a biggie for me. Indeed, we never talked about that.

And you are possibly right. The event this year precipitated at her this practical concern, and that may be the main reason why she wants me to hire the plan.

If it will make your mom feel better about something she's stressed about, I would consider it. Other than the expense, I don't see a downside. Maybe it would mean a lot to her. Maybe not.

A basic funeral in the U.K. is that. You get the coffin, cremation, embalming, collection from morgue, hearse and one car for family, plus order of service. Why people pay more than that is beyond me. My brother insisted before he died being as though he was being cremated to have the cheapest they had. His exact words was they are going to burn it so cheap ply wood please.

Here where I live, after 3 or 4 months of payment of the plan, I'm already entitled to its funeral services.

With any agreement that has some form of insurance underwriting, the devil is in the detail. Check every bit of small print.
