I don't think it is, but thinking makes it so, to quote Shakespeare. I think it's the imagination which increases the fear, as most things we feared, looking back, never actually happened. Rather than dwelling on the unsuccessful attempts it's easier to focus on the successful attempts, and learn from them. I'd say that more accidents end in states worse than death than thoroughly planned suicide attempts do anyway. Hanging is the most common and successful method worldwide, and has been for centuries.
