I recently watched "You Were Never Really Here", and it was a great movie. The movie was really touching. There were only a few dialogues, the rest of the movie was full of poetic narrations of the main character's past. The character was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I've never seen a better example than this movie on narrating ptsd.

Please post your suggestions! I trust in your taste of art. :)

Nothing indie here (all hollyweird productions) but here are some that I've seen which left an impression:
  • One flew over the cuckoo's nest
  • Matchstick men
  • The aviator
  • Ordinary people
  • The fisher king
  • Girl interrupted
  • A beautiful mind
  • Shine (best film on this list, imo)

I haven't seen "Bipolarized" or "Infinitely Polar Bear"

Hmmm I dunno...

When films portray challenging MH issues they often run the risk of:
a) creating new (and inaccurate) stereotypes
b) casting blame on victims by giving the false impression that cures are simple and within easy reach
c) generally making light of MH issues and/or making them appear chic, cute or otherwise eccentric.

Not a movie but a series called Maniac on Netflix. Now if only we could all be cured like in that show.

Joker didn't really impress me. I would prefer "I Stand Alone" to Joker. That movie was way more expressive and effective.

women are almost always depicted as mentally ill, hysterical, nagging, oversexed, mentally inferior, http://feminism-boell.org/en/2016/04/08/women-and-mass-media.. It is such a killjoy to be a woman. It makes me want to die. I just feel attacked all the time.
I can't speak for other mental illnesses but I can say that women are more prone to be depressed. It's because we are producing less serotonin than men. Approximately 52% less. :(
I know it's really hard to stand strong against sexism when you have awareness. I'm living in a 3rd world country and things are much harder here. A few weeks ago a woman was murdered and they said "She deserved it, she was a f**ing who*e." The same argument is used when husbands kill their wives. Those are all making me extremely depressed. I can be murdered by my older brothers if they catch me with a boy. And they don't want to send me to collage, because I'm a girl and it's "inappropriate" for me to be on my own in a different city. I wanna cut my fricking head off.

D. Casting blame on companions too, suggesting that "enough love" would cure any mental illness; or that if you're not a Robin Williams character your loved ones who killed themselves will be trapped for eternity in some vicious hell scenario.

Let's not forget 12 Monkeys.

THIS IS what I am talking about !!!!!! I can NOT BELIEVE that the planet still tolerates and does NOTHING when whole communities, countries, regions, have this kind of attitude towards women. Where is the change I was promised when I was born in the 60s and EVERYTHING was going to get BETTER. EVERYTHING is changing for the worse!!!!!!!!!!!! We have billions of people. They all can see what is going on, they have 2 eyes, 2 ears, a mouth, a brain, often they are literate at least in one language. How come Billions of people are too lazy too distracted too involved with their own little world, too beholden to the electorate, too this and too that to DO NOTHING in the face of these atrocities ????????????????????Billions of people are looking and NO ONE DOES ANYTHING !!!!! Watching people doing nothing and saying nothing is the ultimate torture for me. And because we have more and more people on the planet who say less and less, I am more tortured every day.
Not a good situation for joy of life.

Thank you! One flew over the cuckoo's nest was amazing, it's one of my favorites.
My dad worked as an orderly at the hospital where "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed. He was employed there 10 years before the film came out, but he said that it really was like that on some units. He was definitely glad when he could stop working there!

I was locked up in a psychiatry clinic, and to be honest it made me worse. I don't believe that a mental hospital could be a nice place for menatlly ill people. It simply makes it worse to be exposed to those mean nurses and arrogant psychiatrist that actually don't give a sh*t about you. And another fact: They keep you there without your consent. Who knows when will you come out of that hell place. It really makes one feel humiliated.
I couldn't even sleep in clinic because I was crying every night until morning.

"Bug", a 2006 film starring michael shannon and ashley judd is about a schizophrenic and his delusions. It's quite dark. I enjoyed it.
