If we let nature take its course then many of us will eventually die from causes such as cancer and heart disease, which is much more pain for a more prolonged period than what the pains faced in suicide bring. Suicide can be a way to escape a worse death later on in life. Survival instinct leads us to a death that is very likely far worse than what a death of our choosing would be. I don't want to face the horrors of natural death.

Unfortunately from what I have seen that can indeed be true. Even in hospital when the final active dying phase is managed by drugs, the period leading up to it can be awful.
When animals die in nature it is often horrific. The luckiest creature in the world is the well loved pet who is put down peacefully when it's their time.

Agreed. I just wish euthanasia was provided for us as well as pets.

It would be humane but also open to potential abuse.

I think you make interesting points. I've suffered horrible chronic pain for 12 years. For a long time, I was able to deal with my health bc I had always felt hope. But my health has taken a down spiral recently. That hope of getting better has not materialized. Every day is a major struggle with pain on every level. When my health has gotten worse and I've felt death was around the corner, the levels of physical pain are extremely bad. If this condition is gonna linger on for more years (only to probably die a painful death), then ctb is really my only option. My only other hope is that I die without ctb like dying in my sleep, natural causes, or some random drunk driver running me over. I remember a few years ago of a lady vlogger who suffered tremendously with fibromyalgia (had suicide ideation) and from what I gathered she died in 2016 from a non-suicide cause (I think she passed in her sleep). I hope something like that happens to me.

Dying from natural death scares the shit out of me. And lets not forget the fucked up decades long ageing process.

Imagine being past 70, a heart attack can strike anytime. WTF

And cancer will turn you into a nuked, skinny, iron tasting broken eggshell.

So much more bs can happen when one gets old... no thanks.

You're totally right, I think death by « natural » causes is the worst, I have some friends who survived a heart attack they say it's worse than any pain they could have ever imagined....and they were tough guys, not some softies. And heart attack is one of the most frequent causes of death worldwide. So therefore I conclude that this is amongst my reasons to ctb (there are others) - to escape a very likely worse experience of dying where I have no control over what happens and it will very probably be scary and painful !

I want to ctb because of old age and natural death. I am so glad someone else realizes the horrible truth of life. People often put death from Natural causes on pedestal. When even heart attack is horrible way to go.

I also personally would feel better if someone I loved died on their own terms instead of being struck down by a heart attack, or going slowly from an illness.

I've been thinking about these things as well.
And also, I've always thought that this "peaceful" death in an old age in your sleep is fucking terrifying as hell. Because I imagine when I'm old and otherwise in perfect health I will still know that my time is coming because of my age and soon I will die I will go to sleep every evening thinking if this is the night? Is this the night I will not wake up from? That kind of waiting on death every time you go to sleep or even just lie down seems terrifying to me.

I would love nothing more in this world then to die in my sleep. That way you'll never have to "face" death I believe. You will never know you have died. Blissful.

this is why i will never be comfortable with a natural death.

as someone who has seen many people die from horrible forms of cancer i know for a fact that i don't want that to be the way i go. the battle usually last for years because modern medicine only prolongs suffering for terminally ill people, and the worst part is that it will happen to most of us, 1 out of every 3 people develops some form of cancer in their lifetime. why is dying without any shred of dignity better than a peaceful exit? i'll never understand that mentality that most people have.

The reality we reside in is a grim place. There is so many horrible ways to die. I agree with OP. I rather pick the way I want to die, than let fate pick how I die.

I agree. I remember being very young and my grandma would take me and my cousins into a nursing home to visit our great grandmother who had Alzheimer's. I remember looking around at everyone in the nursing home and deciding as a child I didn't want that to be me. Then I watched family members go thru surgery, hospital stays and painful drawn out deaths. I fully decided dying by my own hand is the only way I'll go because despite being completely depressed and dissatisfied with my horrible life I refuse to live into old age.

I watched my grandmother suffer with dementia for almost 20 years. I will not live like that. The minute I show signs I'm out. I also have a disease that carries multiple strains of cancer, and I have all 3 of those. Already had cancer once from it. Just waiting for it to hit again. I've watched too many friends die of cancer. I will not go out that way. I will use my gun at that point

I've seen what brain cancer did to my dad. Wished he could be euthanized to save him from the suffering.

Since then, I've decided that I'm going to die in my own terms.

It's kind of a lose-lose for humans no matter what. If we lived like the animals do we would mostly die violent, horrific deaths trying to just survive all the threats in nature. Since we live in organized social groups and communities we can potentially live up to old age ... to die of horrific things like cancer, heart disease, or degradation of the brain.

If there is a god it's a sadist that's for shit sure.

Suicide may be the only way out.
Only a few people die in their sleep, many of us are doomed to suffer before death if we die naturally.
It is absolutely unnatural that now we live so long. Thus after a certain age we become more prone to illnesses.
I think if death is inevitable, then everybody should have a choice whether to live until the end or to die avoiding severe symptoms. It would be much more humane rather than keeping the patients months on a small bed. To live and to die are basic human rights.

Worse than that is people like us, dying every second but still living life one shitty day at a time.

We understand it with animals. If a horse blows out it's leg or a cat has cancer everybody gets the idea of 'putting it out of it's misery'. But humans? Eff that, GAWD doesn't want you to do that! And look I'm not disparaging anyone of their belief system but it is maddening when the usual invoking of god or something else and it's please- wtf are you even going on about?
