If boredom were a CTB method, I would be long gone

Has anyone else had a significant alteration in moods following a course of probiotics, antibiotics or parasitic cleanse?

I'll spare the details, but I have "bigly". The level of "darkness" around me was diminished through this cleansing process.

No pun intended but this was a night and day change for me.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Little known fact some of the early psychiatric medications were initially used as anti-parasitic medication.

What's inside your gut can definitely influence your moods. Science is just starting to figure this out.

Absolutely. I haven't noticed anything myself, but I've heard of other being people finding benefits from things such as probiotics, cleaner diets, etc.

CAUTION thread is descriptive.

@Maxtothemax if you're eating one of your piping hot buns, click away.

I tried a new and relatively expensive brand of probiotics. Before I knew it I had intestinal worms coming out in the mornings after drinking my morning coffee.... *wink wink*

Googled and could not match the exact nematodes I was expelling. Although these weren't pinworms, the nematodes looked to be of a similar family. In the states, lots of young children catch pinworms from school and pinworm medicine is sold OTC without a prescription.

I researched and read that the medicine for pinworms is effective for all types of nematodes. Thus, I purchased the medicine and used it as directed. I flushed out somewhere between 50 and 75 intestinal worms from this medicine.

I did two more rounds of this medicine after waiting several months to see if I could expel more, but it seemed I got them all expelled after the first round of treatment.

I don't perceive this is an issue for me any longer and I haven't done another round of medicine in 2 years or so.

Without thinking anything about it, I look back on this experience which was about three years ago and realize that my mood was so much darker than it is today. The only variable that I could connect was having gone through this cleansing process.

Studies are showing the link between gut microbiome and moods.

Having gone through this makes me wonder if some members on the board potentially could benefit from something like this on their end (no pun intended).

There are people intentionally swallowing worms now in order to populate their intentional tracts. I forgot the exact reason why and am unclear how prevalent this is, but this is being done for health reasons. I think there's some digestive issues where people are swallowing worms on purpose.

Some scientists are speculating that humans evolved with worms in their intestinal tract and that missing these worms could be a reason why autoimmune diseases are so prevalent today.

It just amazes me how much science still doesn't know about the human body.

The day may come when we will eventually be eating worms on top of our buns.

Yummy.

However, I would venture to guess that we'll over half the people here have messed up microbiome. This means your gut bacteria, fungus, and parasites are not the ideal percentages and/or species.

Thus, don't be so quick to look cross eyed....

This is really interesting. My GI has been really screwy the last few years. And so has my mood. I'm gonna look into this.
Thanks for the heads up.

I was telling my last psychiatrist from the Middle East about this, and he said that they had a huge book on parasitology when he was in med school in the Middle East. He told me he was shocked that Western Medical Schools didn't have training on parasites. I agree with him completely.

Way more of an issue than one realizes. Once you recover from hearing of this concept, you might consider trying probiotics, etc.

There are people crazy enough to try the tapeworm diet in order to lose weight. They take a pill containing a tapeworm egg which eventually hatches, the tapeworm grows inside your body and eats whatever you're eating.

Our American government understands. But our doctors, in general, don't understand because they aren't taught in med school. Huge factor in our well being.

I have suffered with hideous bowel issues for four years. Last year after a period of almost a month without a BM, it nearly killed me (long story). I fought my way back using various medication, but I've also had many CT scans and I expect my biome was eviscerated.
I'm now trying to help my dodgy bowel as best I can. I still use polyethylglycol because I can effectively modulate the dose. But I'm also changing my diet to include a good balance of soluble and insoluble fibre.
I take a probiotic (currently Alflorex, which I'm trialling) and a prebiotic inulin supplement. The inulin is from chicory root extract and should (hopefully and theoretically), not only provide a good prebiotic, but also butyric acid which will hopefully act as food for the epithelial cells of my colon wall, giving it the best chance for recovery.
I'm also taking flax seeds and magnesium citrate.
It's a careful balance of medication (which I'm hoping to reduce), food as medicine (experimenting) and supplements (also experimenting).
I'm still not good, but considering I nearly died last year, it's a damn site better than just chugging loads of stimulant laxatives, which is what the shit gastro doc advised.

I am now convinced that the gut biome is really important. Loads of stuff we accept in modern life is really bad for the biome and yes, I believe it can contribute to mental health illnesses. Don't forget, one of the chemicals that regulates the gut is seretonin.

Wouldn't it be ironic if a significant proportion of mental health issues could be treated by simply eating properly?

Nice to see you are actively engaged in helping yourself.

Paradoxically some are doing better on low or zero fiber for BM and intestine issues. If interested Google Amber O'Hearn.... She eats carnivore and is off all bipolar meds with this diet. More anecdotal stories at zerocarbzen dot Com....

Stuff is counter intuitive with lots of dietary stuff for lots of people.

I tried carnivore and had zero joint pain.... All fibromyalgia pain was gone. My endo said my T was so high it looked as though I was on steroids. ... But had other problems so I came off it. It messed up my liver enzymes and cholesterol and caused constipation.

Four others that stand out for the carnivore diet Dr. Shawn Baker; Dr Georgia Ede; Makayla Peterson; and her dad, Jordan Peterson.

I'm not necessarily endorsing this diet but rather I'm showing that some people do great on a contrarian diet so keep experimenting I think you'll dial in everything. I'm happy to see all the good things you're doing!

I've investigated low fibre diets. I've also investigated low carb high fat/keto diets for my other (metabolic)issues. These diets can work well but that doesn't remove the fact that they are biological hacks and are potentially dangerous. They always come with 'side effects' and long term issues.
I'd only try such a thing if I was more experienced in nutrition and had professional support, including regular blood tests. Just because something works in treating a specific problem, doesn't make it safe or desirable. Also, things that work in the short term may have deleterious long term consequences. Using food as medicine is no different than using drugs as medicine. You have to be informed and you have to be careful. Extreme diets require extreme supplementation and can cause more harm than good on balance.
Personally, I'm inclined to favour a more balanced and baseline approach based on research and experience rather than other people's declamation of wondrous results.
However, I'm not against more extreme diets for more extreme issues, I just need to become more informed, either by experience or consultation.
